    Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted during 1986–87 on a sandy loam acid Alfisol of Barapani, Meghalaya, India to study the effect of liming on boron nutrition of pea and corn grown in a sequence. Lime and boron were applied to pea and their residual effect was studied on corn. Application of 1.5 kg B ha−1 significantly increased the pod and stover yield of pea. A sharp yield depression occurred at higher B rates. Liming accentuated B deficiency in the absence of B treatment and it cured toxicity arising from excess B supply. A combination of B at 1.5 kg ha−1 and lime at 3.0 t ha−1 was optimum for pea, but this level of B application was insufficient to meet B requirements of succeeding corn. With higher rates of B fertilization, the residual effect of B on corn yield was significant. Concentration of B in shoot, pod, grain and stover of crops increased with the rate of B application. With increasing liming rate, B concentration decreased. Addition of B increased the hot-water soluble B in soil. The availability of native and added B decreased sharply with increasing liming rate.

    Notes: Abstract Recent gamma-ray observations of solar flares have provided a better means for estimating the heating of the solar atmosphere by energetic protons. Such heating has been suggested as the explanation of the continuum emission of the white-light flare. We have analyzed the effects on the photosphere of high-energy particles capable of producing the intense gamma-ray emission observed in the 1978 July 11 flare. Using a simple energy-balance argument and taking into account hydrogen ionization, we have obtained the following conclusions: (1) Heating near τ5000 = 1 in the input HSRA model atmosphere is negligible, even for very high fluxes of energetic particles. (2) Energy deposition increases with height for the inferred proton spectra, and does not depend strongly upon the assumed angle of incidence. The computed energy inputs fall in the range 10–100 ergs (cm3 s)−1 at the top of the photosphere. (3) H− continuum dominates for column densities as small as 1022 cm−3, but at greater heights hydrogen ionizes sufficiently for the higher continua to dominate the energy balance. (4) The total energy deposited in the ‘photospheric’ region of H− dominance could be within a factor of 3 of the necessary energy deposition, by comparison with the white-light flare of 1972 August 7, but the emergent spectrum is quite red so that the intensity excess in the visible band is insufficient to explain the observations. In summary, it remains energetically possible, within observational limits, that high-energy protons could cause sufficient heating of the upper photosphere to produce detectable excess continuum, but emission from the vicinity of τ = 1 is not significant.

    Notes: Abstract The Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation instrument (SUMER) observations show high Doppler shifts and temporal variations in profiles of ultraviolet lines from low temperature gas in the corona above the active region NOAA 7974. The profiles indicate ≈ 100 km s-1 flows coming from an almost stationary source that appears bright in the lines of N III and Si III. The variations in line-of-sight velocities and intensities suggest small knots of cooling plasma emanating from a small region high in the corona. A few arc sec sunward of the region where the cool flows are seen is an elongated region of enhanced higher temperature, low velocity Ne VI and Mg VI line emission.

    Notes: Abstract Steady state level density of 20 levels of boron-like ions, Mg viii and Si x, have been computed as a function of electron density and temperature. We have accounted for collisional and spontaneous radiative processes. Photo-excitation between the two levels of the ground term has also been considered. Using the computed level density, line intensities have been obtained as a function of electron density and temperature. In case of Mg viii, line intensity ratio I(430.47)/I(436.62) is found to be electron density sensitive. Likewise other pairs of lines namely, I(75.03)/I(74.86), I(315.02)/I(430.47), and I(315.02)/I(335.23) are also found to be density sensitive. Similar density sensitive line intensity ratios have been found for Si x. Absolute line fluxes from these ions at earth distance have been computed and are found to be comparable with values obtained, using various satellite and rocket measurements.
