    Notes: NiTi shape memory alloy particles have been incorporated inside SnAgCu lead freesolder paste in order to improve the mechanical performances of solder paste. However, because ofthe non-wetting properties of solid NiTi particles by the liquid SnAgCu matrix, the development offluorine gas treatment of both NiTi and SnAgCu particles has been optimized. Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) micrographs of NiTi/SnAgCu composite materials have shown that “Fluorinetreatment” of SnAgCu powders lead to a huge increase of the NiTi powder content inside theliquid SnAgCu matrix where no effect have been observed when NiTi materials are fluorinated.     Notes: Abstract The effect of GH treatment on hepatic cytochrome P450 content, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH), aminopyrine-N-demethylase (AND), testosterone hydroxylase, testosterone 5α- and 5β-reductase, UDP-glucuronyl transferase (UDPGT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in immature rainbow trout were investigated. Hepatic cytochrome P450 content, AHH and GST activities were measured in both GH implanted and GH injected animals whereas other activities were assayed in GH implanted trout only. GH implants significantly decreased cytochrome P450 content at 15 days compared to the control but no significant effect was observed at 15 or 30 d when GH was injected biweekly. In both cases, AHH activity was significantly decreased by GH treatment compared to the control whereas GST remained unchanged. Compared to the control, GH implanted fish exhibited a pronounced inhibition of AND, a decreased 6β and 16β-testosterone hydroxylation, an inhibition of UDPGT with testosterone as substrate and an enhanced 17β-testosterone oxidation.

    Notes: Abstract Olfaction is a crucial function in most fish species, but little is known about biotransformation enzymes in the olfactory organ. This study demonstrates that biotransformation enzymes usually found in the rainbow trout liver, are present in the olfactory organ as well. While microsomal cytochrome P450 reductase, p-nitrophenol hydroxylase and cytosolic glutathioneS-transferase presented similar levels in both the olfactory organ and the liver, microsomal 7-ethoxyresorufinO-deethylase (EROD), 7-ethoxycoumarinO-deethylase, and 7-pentoxyresorufinO-deethylase were much lower in the olfactory organ (77-, 35-, 200-times respectively). Furthermore, microsomes from the olfactory organ were able to perform testosterone hydroxylation only in the 16α-position while testosterone was hydroxylated in the 16β-position by liver microsomes. Using polyclonal antibodies raised against perch cytochrome P4501A1, the immunoreactive protein was shown to be strongly expressed in various cellular types forming the nonsensory epithelium. Some immunostaining was also reported in the nonsensory cellular elements constituting the sensory epithelium, while olfactory receptor cells failed to show cytochrome P4501A1-immunoreactivity. Finally, the exposure of rainbow trout to waterborne β-naphthoflavone (0.1 μg ml−1) for 2 or 4 days resulted in a higher induction of EROD activity in the olfactory organ compared to the liver. The presence of biotransformation enzymes in the olfactory organ of rainbow trout addresses the question of their involvement in the detoxication/toxication of pollutants as well as in the olfactory function.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Verdrehungsversuch und die Scherfestigkeit von Fels In dieser Veröffentlichung wird eine Maschine zum Testen von Drehbrüchen beschrieben, die in der Abteilung und dem Labor für Felsmechanik der „Electricité de France“ entwickelt wurde. Untersuchungen an verschiedenen Gesteinsarten ermöglichten es, das Torsionsverhalten der Gesteine ohne oder mit zusätzlichem einaxialem bzw. allseitigem hydrostatischem Druck zu analysieren. Verdrehungsteste an rohrartigen Versuchskörpern ohne Sollbruchfläche führten zur Bestimmung der mechanischen Bruchkennwerte der Gesteine besonders auch im Bereich der Zug- und reinen Scherspannungen (linker Bereich der Mohrschen Hüllkurve). Im letzten Teil der Studie werden die erhaltenen Ergebnisse mit denen von traditionellen Laborversuchen verglichen. Es zeigte sich, daß die Ergebnisse der Torsionsteste in naher Übereinstimmung mit denen von klassischen Dreiaxialversuchen sind. Deutliche Unterschiede bestehen jedoch gegenüber den Ergebnissen der Brasilianischen, Casagrandeschen und Lundborgschen Teste, die in ihrer Versuchsanordnung die Bruchfläche vorschreiben.
    Abstract: Summary The Torsional Test and the Shear Strength of Rock This paper describes a torsion testing machine developed at the Rock Mechanics laboratories of Electricité de France. Results obtained from a series of rocks have permitted the analysis of rock behaviour in torsion with or without superimposed axial or hydrostatic loading. Tests on tubular specimens lead to determination of strength parameters, especially in the “nose” of the failure range, without imposing a predetermined fracture surface. A comparison is also made with the more traditional laboratory tests. It shows that the mechanical parameters obtained in the torsion test are close to those given by the classic triaxial test, also that important differences can exist in relation to the “Brasilian”, “Casagrande” and “Lundborg” tests all of which impose a predetermined surface of fracture.
    Notes: Résumé L'essai de torsion et la résistance au cisaillement des roches Cette étude présente un appareillage de torsion mis au point au laboratoire de Mécanique des Roches d'Electricité de France. Les résultats obtenus sur une série de roches ont permis d'analyser le comportement des roches soumises à un effort de torsion superposé ou non à un effort axial ou hydrostatique. Les essais réalisés sur des éprouvettes tubulaires aboutissent à la détermination des paramètres mécaniques de rupture des roches, notamment dans la zone sommitale de la courbe intrinsèque sans imposer un plan préétabli de rupture. Dans un stade final, une comparaison est faite avec les essais traditionnels de laboratoire. Elle montre que les paramètres mécaniques obtenus par l'essai de torsion sont voisins de ceux obtenus par l'essai triaxial classique, alors que des différences notables peuvent exister avec l'essai brésilien, l'essai Casagrande, l'essai Lundborg qui sont des essais à plan de rupture imposé.
