    Notes: Abstract The concentration of fluoride in needles, its effects on tree defoliation and on decomposition of needles (litter), and its subsequent accumulation in the upper soil horizons were observed in pine plantations near and far from a new aluminum smelter. Pinus taeda and Pinus palustris stands within 0.8 km of the smelter had significantly higher levels of foliar F than a P. taeda stand 1.8 km from the source. Neither temporal patterns nor amounts of needlefall were altered by airborne F from the smelter. In addition, elevated levels of foliar F did not affect the rate of decomposition of pine needles over a period of 6 mo. Soluble F in soil samples increased significantly in the upper 10 cm of the soils at the sites nearest the F source over a period of 7 yr since the start of F emissions.

    Notes: Abstract An analysis is presented for the fracture of an adhesively bonded double-cantilever beam that fails with extensive plastic deformation of the adherends. The analysis permits a value for the toughness of the joint to be distinguished from the energy absorbed by the plastic deformation. Specifically, this value for toughness can be determined from post-fracture observations of the deformation and from a knowledge of the constitutive properties of the adherends. The analysis has been used to determine experimentally the toughness of plastically deforming joints formed using three different adhesives to bond a series of different thicknesses of aluminium and steel. In each case, it was found that, despite large differences in the extent of deformation, the value for toughness was dependent only on the materials used to form the joint. The toughness was independent of the thickness of the adherends.

    Notes: The dynamic mechanical response of adhesively bonded metal beams has been examined over a broad temperature range using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The measured dynamic mechanical response of the bonded beam contains rich information about the viscoelastic properties of the adhesive resin such as glass transition temperatures. The measured storage moduli and loss factors of the bonded beams are very sensitive to changes in the properties of adhesive induced by exposing the beam specimens to environmental attack. Dynamic mechanical responses associated with dry adhesive resin, water plasticized resin, and aggregated water were observed for an electro-galvanized steel/epoxy beam exposed to water. The effect of the presence of an interfacial accommodation zone (IAZ) between adhesive resin and metal substrate was also examined; measured properties were very sensitive to the presence of a low modulus IAZ. It was successfully demonstrated in this study that the DMTA testing of bonded beams is a potentially useful tool for studying dynamic performance and durability of automotive adhesive joints.

    Notes: Abstract A method is described for calculating the complex shear modulus of structural adhesives from dynamic test data on a doubly clamped sandwich beam in which the adhesive is contained as a thin layer. The accuracy of the technique is validated by finite-element analysis. Values of modulus obtained using the doubly clamped beam technique are found to be in excellent agreement with values obtained from dynamic tests on bulk specimens of an epoxy adhesive.

    Notes: The reflectance of vacuum-metallized plastic parts prepared using corrosion resistant metals such as chromium, nickel, and stainless steel is substantially less than that of electroplated chromium. Model calculations and data indicate that the use of a clear topcoat to protect the vacuum-deposited metal layer is a major factor in reducing the observed reflectance. There does not appear to be a simple change in metal deposition process, film structure, or composition that can compensate for the loss of reflectance incurred by application of the topcoat.

    Notes: Dynamic mechanical measurements have been widely used for characterization of polymer blends and composites. This paper discusses application of continuum models to interpretation of the dynamic mechanical response of isotropic microscopically heterogeneous polymer blends. The models typically predict shifts in apparent glass transition temperature (location of principal loss tangent maximum) for each blend constituent. Experimentally observed shifts in the apparent glass transition of heterogeneous blend constituents may thus arise at least partly for mechanical reasons rather than because of changes in the properties or glass transition temperature of the blend constituents. It is suggested that, for heterogeneous blends of well characterized phase morphology, changes in glass transition behavior of blend constituents be determined by comparison of measured and calculated loss tangent maxima. For two-component blends, the loss tangent at the temperature at which the loss tangents of the blend constituents are equal may be useful as a further diagnostic tool for changes in loss mechanisius.

    Notes: Crosslinked compositions prepared from bismaleimidodiphenyl methane and diallylbisphenol A in the weight ratio of 0.99 to 1.31 have been subjected to dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The glass transition temperatures of all these fully cured compositions are above 300°C. The stoichiometry of the reactants in the above range does not change the thermal degradation pattern of these crosslinked polymers. DMTA shows that there is a very small decrease in storage modulus at room temperature with increasing amount of diallylbisphenol A. The glass trnasition temperature decreases slightly as the amount of diallylbisphenol A increases; the Tg range is 330-339°C.

    Notes: Modulus-composition data obtained on a model three-component particulate composite comprising a finely divided dispersed rubber phase and inorganic glass beads in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix cannot be represented appropriately in terms of the multicomponent form of the well-known Kerner equation. The data are more nearly in accord with a model based on the assumption that the dispersed rubber phase and the PMMA matrix, taken together, constitute an effective matrix for the glass bead filler. Interparticle interactions are discussed in terms of a maximum packing fraction for each filler species; interspecies interactions are found to be minor for the system studied.

    Notes: The representation and interpretation of dynamic mechanical properties of heterogeneous polymer-polymer composites are discussed in terms of equivalent mechanical models and the viscoelastic form of the well-known Kerner equation. Model parameters calculated from dispersed phase volume fraction and matrix Poisson's ratio (using the Kerner equation) are in fairly good agreement with experimental values for systems comprising soft inclusions in a hard matrix. The effects of partial phase inversion on dynamic properties are discussed in terms of an extension of the Kerner equation. Model calculations indicate that the in-phase component of the complex modulus depends primarily on dispersed phase volume concentration, while the out-of-phase component depends on both the concentration and the morphology of the dispersed phase. Although substantial information about the microstructure of polymer-polymer composites can in principle be deduced from dynamic measurements, quantitative correlation between dynamic properties and use properties such as impact strength (which may have a quite different dependence on structural parameters) is probably fortuitous.
