Notes: Abstract HighT c superconductor materials of yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) have been etched by a new electrochemical technique. In this technique, acids like hydrochloric, nitric and phosphoric have been used as an electrolyte and etching has been achieved with acid dilutions as high as 1:200 with water. It is observed that rapid and controlled etching is possible by this technique.

Notes: Abstract Commercially pure titanium substrate was coated with aluminium by flame spraying or arc spraying techniques and was irradiated with a laser to form a laser-alloyed zone (LAZ). The microstructure of the LAZ was investigated. High-temperature oxidation tests were carried out in air at different high temperatures and the characteristics of the oxide layer were investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy. The aqueous corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The laser-processed material showed considerable improvement in the high-temperature oxidation-resistant property while the aqueous corrosion-resistant property of the LAZ was found to remain almost unaffected.

Notes: Abstract Carbon-based deposits were electrochemically formed on silicon substrates in ethanol at room temperature. This work was based on the work reported by Namba, who described the electrochemical deposition of diamond from organic solutions. The deposits were analysed using a scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Scanning electron micrographs showed some crystalline deposits on the silicon. EDS was unable to identify carbon in the film, but did reveal impurities such as sodium, potassium, calcium and zinc. It was later established that the impurities most likely came from impurities in the graphite used for a counter electrode. XPS showed the presence of carbon species, and subsequently Raman spectroscopy was used to classify further the carbon deposits. Raman spectroscopy showed the presence of amorphous carbon in some films, but no diamond peak was observed for any of the films. EIS revealed that the impedance of the deposited films was nearly identical to that of the uncoated silicon, and did not resemble the impedance of diamond. Thus, in this work, carbon–based films were formed electrochemically, but these films were not diamond.

Notes: Abstract The effect of processing parameters on the environmental stability of YBaCuO superconductor was studied by exposing the pellets to a constant level of relative humidity for periods up to 2000 h. Various annealing treatments and compaction pressures, including hot pressing, were utilized to fabricate the pellets. T c measurements, Auger electron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning electron and optical microscopy were employed to characterize the degradation. Samples coated with a polyimide material were also included in the study to determine its utility as a moisture barrier. Results indicated that a slow anneal (41 h) in flowing oxygen produces samples that are far more stable compared to the ones annealed rapidly (9 h) in air. The pellet compaction pressure does not appear to significantly affect the degradation characteristics of the material. The hot-pressed samples showed considerable degradation within 800 h of exposure. The polyimide was found to be ineffective in inhibiting the attack of the humid environment.

Notes: Abstract Surface alloys were made on mild steel, coated with nickel and chromium using laser surface alloying. Mild steel was coated with a composite layer of nickel and chromium using the plasma technique. This was followed by laser irradiation using a continuous carbon dioxide laser. Oxidation and corrosion behaviour of these alloys was then determined by carrying out oxidation in air at 800 °C and corrosion tests at room temperatures in 1 n H2SO4. With a 75 μm layer of nickel and chromium each, it was possible to make surface alloys on mild steel, which had a chromium concentration of 6–7 wt%, but the nickel concentration varied from 10–20 wt%. Oxidation behaviour improved significantly over the as-coated specimen and aqueous corrosion improved considerably.

Notes: Electrodeposition of ethylene-co-acrylic acid (EAA) polymer, as thin films on carbon particle substrates, was carried out in a fluidized electrode bed reactor. Feeder current, time of deposition, and flow rate of anolyte (i.e., bed expansion or bed porosity) were the key parameters investigated. The film characteristics were evaluated through SEM and FTIR analyses and the amounts determined by weighing. The effect of these parameters on the electrodeposition process is discussed, and optimum conditions for deposition are proposed. Also, a possible mechanism for electrodeposition, particularly for the EAA-carbon system, is discussed.

Notes: Electrodeposition of styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA) polymer, as thin films on carbon particle substrates, was carried out in a fluidized electrode bed reactor (FEBR). Feeder current, time of deposition, flow rate of anolyte (i.e., bed expansion or bed porosity), concentration of SMA in the anolyte, and pH of the anolyte were the key parameters investigated. The film characteristics were evaluated through SEM and FTIR analyses, the amounts determined by weighing. The effect of these parameters on the electrodeposition process is discussed and optimum conditions for deposition are proposed. Also, a possible mechanism for electrodeposition, particularly for the SMA-carbon system, is discussed. Furthermore, where relevant, the parameters and mechanism are compared with those for our parallel work on the ethylene-co-acrylic acid (EAA)-carbon system.

Notes: Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been copolymerized with n-butyl acrylate (n-BA), ethyl acrylate (EA), and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) in solution at 70°C using benzoyl peroxide as free radical initiator. The copolymer composition was estimated by the 1H-NMR spectroscopic technique. The copolymers were further characterized by IR, XRD, TGA, DTA, DSC, GPC, and solubility. The adhesive characteristics of the copolymers to cellulosic substrate are also reported. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
