    Description: The underlying theme of Three Centuries of Greek Culture under the Roman Empire is the idea that, under Roman rule, Greek culture was still alive and dynamic and continued to exert a degree of cultural domination, either real or apparent. So, we hope to analyse the meanings of concepts such as “Greek” or “Greece” in the Empire. Are we right to assume that there was a clear opposition between Greek and Roman? Or would it be more accurate to speak of a “Graeco-Roman world”? It would certainly be possible to make a list of “elements of identity”, on both sides —Greek and Roman—, but, in this case, where should the borders between identity and community be placed? Three Centuries of Greek Culture under the Roman Empire presents several approaches to the period between the second and fourth centuries AD from a variety of angles, perspectives and disciplines. Until now, this time has usually been considered to be the junction of the decline between the classical world and the emergence of the medieval world; however, this book establishes a basis for considering the Imperial period as a specific stage in cultural, historical and social development with a distinct personality of its own.

    Notes: Two species of the family Bothidae (lefteye flounders), Mancopsetta maculata metadata and M. milfordi occur in the south-west Atlantic but are caught rarely by commercial bottom trawlers. Little is therefore known about their general biology from this area. A total of 251 M. maculata and 276 M. milfordi were sampled during deep-water exploratory fishing conducted in November 1994 within the Falkland Islands Interim and Outer Conservation Zones, at depths of 400-1000 m, using standard commercial bottom trawling gear. The two species were found to have similar geographical distributions between 48.30′-53.30'S and 55°-62° W and were often obtained at the same stations in depths of 400-900 m on the continental slope. Mancopsetta maculata maculata showed a uni-modal cohort structure with a modal length at the 29-cm total length size-class. Males of M. m. maculata outnumbered females in a ratio of 3.5 : 1. Mancopsetta milfordi showed a tri-modal length distribution, the main mode at the 37-cm total length size-class, with females outnumbering males in a ratio of 1.1 : 1. Length-weight relationships and length-at-age information are presented for the two species. Diet was determined from the analysis of stomach contents and, although the major prey type for both species consisted of crustaceans, the morid fish Austrophycis marginata also formed an important part of the diet of M. milfordi.     Notes: : The high spatial variability of nitrate concentrations in ground water of many regions is thought to be closely related to spatially-variable leaching rates from agricultural activities. To clarify the relative roles of the different nitrate leaching controlling variables under irrigated agriculture in northeastern Colorado, we conducted an extensive series of leaching simulations with the NLEAP model using best estimates of local agricultural practices. The results of these simulations were then used with GIS to estimate the spatial variability of leachate quality for a 14,000 ha area overlying the alluvial aquifer of the South Platte River. Simulations showed that in the study area, differences in soil type might lead to 5–10 kg/ha of N variation in annual leaching rates while variability due to crop rotations was as much as 65 kg-N/ha for common rotations. Land application of manure from confined animal feeding operations may account for more than 100 kg-N/ha additional leaching. For a selected index rotation, the simulated nitrogen leaching rates across the area varied from 10 to 299 kg/ha and simulated water volumes leached ranged from 13 to 76 cm/yr depending on soil type, irrigation type, and use of manure. Resulting leachate concentrations of 3.5–140 mg/l NO3 as N were simulated. Land application of manure was found to be the most important factor determining the mass flux of nitrate leached and the combination of sprinkler irrigation and manure application yields the highest leachate concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract In the concept of modularity, plant modules are considered as iterative units and their changes are analyzed in terms of number or size. This paper, however, analyses changes with respect to the reproductive functional performance of modules and individual plant age. Patterns of resource allocation and partitioning in reproductive modules (fruits) are compared between two different age groups of a bushy perennial plant, Cistus ladanifer. Although modules do not differ in their allocation strategies (young plant modules produce the same seed and packing/protective structure biomass as old plant modules), their partitioning strategies change with plant age: young plant modules produce a larger number of lighter seeds than old plants. These differences have a direct consequence on the plant pre-dispersal fitness, which is not counteracted by insect predation on reproductive modules. These results are empirical evidence of a differentiation in the performance of reproductive modules with the ontogenetic development of this plant species. We think that the consideration of such kind of changes in module features is essential in the analysis of the iterative construction of plants.

    Notes: Abstract Forage production in irrigated mountain meadows plays a vital role in the livestock industry in Colorado and Wyoming. Mountain meadows are areas of intensive fertilization and irrigation which may impact regional CH4 and N2O fluxes. Nitrogen fertilization typically increases yields, but N-use efficiency is generally low. Neither the amount of fertilizer-N recovered by the forage nor the effect on N2O and CH4 emissions were known. These trace gases are long-lived in the atmosphere and contribute to global warming potential and stratospheric ozone depletion. From 1991 through 1993 studies were conducted to determine the effect of N source, and timing of N-fertilization on forage yield, N-uptake, and trace gas fluxes at the CSU Beef Improvement Center near Saratoga, Wyoming. Plots were fertilized with 168 kg N ha-1. Microplots labeled with15N-fertilizer were established to trace the fate of the added N. Weekly fluxes of N2O and CH4 were measured during the snow-free periods of the year. Although CH4 was consumed when soils were drying, flood irrigation converted the meadow into a net source of CH4. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect CH4 flux but increased N2O emissions. About 5% of the applied N was lost as N2O from spring applied NH4NO3, far greater than the amount lost as N2O from urea or fall applied NH4NO3. Fertilizer N additions increased forage biomass to a maximum of 14.6 Mg ha-1 with spring applied NH4NO3. Plant uptake of N-fertilizer was greater with spring applications (42%), than with fall applications (22%).

    Notes: Summary Three copolymers of ethylene and 1-decene, covering a wide range of compositions, have been synthesized with a MgCl2-supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The analysis by DSC and X-ray shows a great degree of heterogeneity in these copolymers and appreciable levels of crystallinity, corresponding to the orthorhombic lattice of polyethylene, are present even for very high 1-decene contents.

    Notes: Abstract A set of long term15N studies was initiated during the summers of 1981 and 1982 on the backslope and footslope, respectively, of a catena in the shortgrass steppe of northeastern Colorado. Microplots labeled with15N urea were sampled for15N and total N content in 1981 and 1982 and again in 1992. In November, 1982, 100% of the added N was recovered in the soil-plant system of the finer-textured footslope, compared to 39% in the coarser-textured backslope microplots. Ten years later,15N recovery of the applied N decreased at both topographic positions to 85% in the footslope and 29% in the backslope. Average losses since the time of application were 3.5 g N m−2yr−1 in the backslope and 0.8 g N m−2yr−1 in the footslope. In 1992, soil organic matter was physically fractionated into particulate (POM) and mineral associated (MAON) fractions and 21-day mineralization incubations were conducted to assess the relative amounts of15N that were in the slow, passive and active soil organic matter pools, respectively, of the two soils. Our findings confirm the assumptions that POM represents a large portion of the slow organic compartment and that the MAON represents a large fraction of the passive compartment defined in the Century model. The N located in the MAON had the lowest availability for plant uptake. Isotopic data were consistent with textural effects and with the Century model compartmentalization of soil organic N based on the residence time of the organic N.

    Notes: Abstract A toughened hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramic has been obtained through the incorporation of magnesia partially stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ) under uniaxial pressing and sintering in wet oxygen at 1250 °C for 4 h. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and infrared spectra (FT-IR) show that HA is the only calcium phosphate phase present. The composite (MgPSZ-HA) has a density of 94% the theoretical value. The bending strength and the fracture toughness are around 50% higher for Mg-PSZ reinforced than for HA. The grain size and the fracture surface were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of the Mg-PSZ particles on the fracture mechanism of the HA ceramic is discussed.

    Notes: Hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives based on styrene-butadiene block copolymers with aliphatic and aromatic tackifying resins and plastifying oils have been analyzed. The importance of the resin structure in the compatibility with the block copolymer and the influence of the different paraffinic-naphthenic character of the oil in PSA performance have been shown. Ternary systems with a fixed polymer content (30%) and with variable resin and oil contents show a good miscibility over the whole range of compositions, and only one glass transition temperature was found in each composition. The relationship between chemical composition and bulk performance are expressed in terms of the visco-elastic behavior of the adhesives, measured by DMTA. It has been shown that at a given resin content there is a minimum on tan δ peak vs. temperature, the melt viscosities present a plateau region and the tack strength shows a maximum. An important conclusion is that phase separation is not a requirement for maximum tack; some restricted miscibility is enough, present in a few microdomains of the blend. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
