    Notes: Comparisons were made with native egg yolk, dried egg yolk and a commercial yolk substitute (soy lecithin). Aqueous emulsions were prepared by sonicating water containing 0–5% NaCl, 20% peanut oil, HC1 or NaOH as needed for pH adjustment, and 1–3% emulsifier expressed as the total of phospholipids, glycolipids and proteins contributed by yolk ingredients or soy lecithin. The median diameters of fat particles in the emulsions with and without dispersing fat droplet floes using Triton X-100, were evaluated by laser light diffraction. The emulsifying properties of low-fat, low-cholesterol egg yolk were similar to or better than those of native yolk and dried egg yolk. Soy lecithin had less effective emulsifying properties than yolk ingredients with respect to coalescence of fat droplets during storage and separation during 70°C treatment.

    Notes: Abstract Autonomous learning systems of significant complexity often consist of several interacting modules or agents. These modules collaborate to produce a system which, when viewed as a whole, exhibit behaviour that can be interpreted in some way as learning. In designing these systems, the complexity of the interactions of large numbers of modules can become overwhelming, making debugging difficult and obscuring the workings of the system when viewed from an architectural level. A way of controlling system complexity called the Layered Learning System architecture (LLS) has been developed, which offers the advantages of incremental development and testing, easier debugging and progressive upgrading facilitation. A hexapod robot has been implemented using LLS principles, with the main learning task being that of learning to walk as fast as possible without falling over.

    Notes: Abstract A study of otolith aging and growth-rate variation in the flyingfish Hirundichthys affinis (Günther) was conducted in the eastern Caribbean (10–16°N; 58–62°W) in 1987–1989. Daily otolith-increment formation was validated in laboratory-reared larvae, confirming the usefulness of otolith-increment counts for age determination of H. affinis juveniles (〈150 mm fork length, FL). A mark-recapture programme to validate increment formation in wild adults was unsuccessful due to tetracycline-linked mortality and insufficient tetracycline uptake in slow-growing adult otoliths. A von Bertalanffy growth curve fitted to juvenile size-at-age data gave preliminary growth-curve parameters of t 0=2.85 d and k=0.00854 on a daily basis, with an asymptotic length, L∞, of 245 mm FL, for eastern Caribbean flyingfish. Juvenile growth rate in H. affinis is sensitive to spatial and temporal variation in temperature. Growth rates were higher where sea-surface temperatures were higher, and were higher for juveniles hatched in warmer months (April–July) than in colder months (November–March). Growth rates were also higher near islands than at more oceanic locations. Variation in juvenile growth rates may influence the spatial and temporal variation in spawning frequency observed in H. affinis.

    Description: Strong gravitational lensing provides some of the deepest views of the Universe, enabling studies of high-redshift galaxies only possible with next-generation facilities without the lensing phenomenon. To date, 21-cm radio emission from neutral hydrogen has only been detected directly out to z  ~ 0.2, limited by the sensitivity and instantaneous bandwidth of current radio telescopes. We discuss how current and future radio interferometers such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will detect lensed H i emission in individual galaxies at high redshift. Our calculations rely on a semi-analytic galaxy simulation with realistic H i discs (by size, density profile and rotation), in a cosmological context, combined with general relativistic ray tracing. Wide-field, blind H i surveys with the SKA are predicted to be efficient at discovering lensed H i systems, increasingly so at z   2. This will be enabled by the combination of the magnification boosts, the steepness of the H i luminosity function at the high-mass end, and the fact that the H i spectral line is relatively isolated in frequency. These surveys will simultaneously provide a new technique for foreground lens selection and yield the highest redshift H i emission detections. More near term (and existing) cm-wave facilities will push the high-redshift H i envelope through targeted surveys of known lenses.

    Description: We report 1.7 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of IRAS F10214+4724, a lensed z  = 2.3 obscured quasar with prodigious star formation. We detect what we argue to be the obscured active nucleus with an effective angular resolution of 〈50 pc at z  = 2.3. The S 1.7 = 210 μJy (9) detection of this unresolved source is located within the Hubble Space Telescope rest-frame ultraviolet/optical arc, however, 100 mas northwards of the arc centre of curvature. This leads to a source-plane inversion that places the European VLBI Network detection to within milliarcseconds of the modelled cusp caustic, resulting in a very large magnification (μ ~70), over an order of magnitude larger than the CO  (1-〉0) derived magnification of a spatially resolved Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) map, using the same lens model. We estimate the quasar bolometric luminosity from a number of independent techniques and with our X-ray modelling find evidence that the AGN may be close to Compton thick, with an intrinsic bolometric luminosity of log 10 (〈 L bol, QSO 〉/L ) = 11.34 ± 0.27 dex. We make the first black hole mass estimate of IRAS F10214+4724 and find log 10 ( M BH /M ) = 8.36 ± 0.56 which suggests a low black hole accretion rate ( $\lambda = \dot{M} / \dot{M}_{\rm Edd} \sim 3\pm ^7_2$ per cent). We find evidence for an M BH / M spheroid ratio that is one to two orders of magnitude larger than that of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at z ~ 2. At face value, this suggests that IRAS F10214+4724 has undergone a different evolutionary path compared to SMGs at the same epoch. A primary result of this work is the demonstration that emission regions of different sizes and positions can undergo significantly different magnification boosts (〉1 dex) and therefore distort our view of high-redshift, gravitationally lensed galaxies.
