    Notizen: Apparatus and techniques were developed to electrodynamically trap and manipulate groups of microparticles. The equipment consists of a vibrating orifice aerosol generator, an inductive particle charger, a plenum chamber, and a double-ring electrodynamic balance. Salt particles (NaNO3) of controllable and measurable mass and charge were produced and introduced into the balance in nitrogen at flow rates up to 25 cm3/min. Ordered arrays of any number of particles up to 26 were assembled and manipulated. Methods for compressing the arrays are presented, and controlled ejection of single particles from a trapped array is demonstrated. Particles of opposite polarity were successfully levitated and kept apart, and aggregation of these particles was then induced by changing the electric field. Raman spectra were recorded for multiple salt particles, each having a diameter of 3.5 μm, by aligning them in a laser beam. The enhanced Raman signal is compared with that from a single particle isolated from the array. From the results, a detection limit of 0.4 pg per particle was estimated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A new technique for the measurement of the radioactive decay of single microparticles has been demonstrated. Although the experiments were made with droplets of order 20 μm in diameter, microparticles in the range 0.1–100 μm can be accommodated. An electrodynamic balance and combination light-scattering photometer were used to measure the charge-loss rate and size of a charged microsphere suspended in a laser beam by superposed ac and dc electrical fields. The charged particle undergoes charge loss in the partially ionized gas atmosphere which results from radioactive decay of 14C-tagged compounds, and the rate of charge loss is proportional to the rate of decay here. The charge on a particle was determined by measuring the dc voltage necessary to stably suspend the particle against gravity while simultaneously determining the droplet size by light-scattering techniques. The parameters which affect the operation of the electrodynamic balance as a radioactivity detector are examined, and the limits of its sensitivity are explored. Radioactivity levels as low as 120 pCi have been measured, and it appears that by reducing the background contamination inside our balance activity levels on the order of 10 pCi can be detected. This new technique has application in the measurement of activity levels and source discrimination of natural and man-made aerosols and smokes and is also useful for studies involving specifically labeled radio-chemical probes.

    Notizen: A new octopole electrode design improves the particle trapping stability of an electrodynamic balance (EDB) and allows one to make three-dimensional force measurements on a trapped particle. A conventional double-ring EDB was modified by splitting each ring into four equal segments that are electrically independent. Three dc sources were combined such that eight potentials were applied to the eight segments of the electrodes. An additional ac voltage was superimposed on each ring segment as in a conventional double-ring EDB. The resulting electric field has dc components in the x, y, and z directions, which can be controlled independently by the three dc supplies. The z component is used to balance and measure vertical forces such as gravity, radiation pressure, or phoretic forces. The x and y fields can be used to suppress lateral oscillations of the trapped particles, and lateral forces on the particle can be measured in terms of the x and y dc voltages. The apparatus and the electric fields are described herein, and the operation of the device is demonstrated for spheres and aggregated particles. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract  The spatial arrangement of resources in patchy habitats influences the distribution of individuals and their ability to acquire resources. We used Chironomus riparius, a ubiquitous aquatic insect that uses leaf particles as an important resource, to ask how the dispersion of resource patches influences the distribution and resource acquisition of mobile individuals in patchy landscapes. Two experiments were conducted in replicated laboratory landscapes (38×38 cm) created by arranging sand and leaf patches in a 5×5 grid so that the leaf patches were either aggregated or uniformly dispersed in the grid. One-day-old C. riparius larvae were introduced into the landscapes in one of three densities (low, medium, high). In experiment 1, we sampled larvae and pupae by coring each patch in each landscape 3, 6, 12, or 24 days after adding larvae. In experiment 2, emerging adults were collected daily for 42 days from each patch in each landscape. In aggregated landscapes, individuals were aggregated in one patch type or the other during a particular developmental stage, but the ”preferred” type changed depending on developmental stage and initial density. Adult emergence was lower by about 30% in all aggregated landscapes. In dispersed landscapes, individuals used both types of patch throughout their life cycles at all initial densities. Thus, patch arrangement influences the distribution of mobile individuals in landscapes, and it influences resource acquisition even when average resource abundance is identical among landscapes. Regardless of patch arrangement, high initial density caused accumulation of early instars in edge patches, 75% mortality of early instars, a 25% increase in development time, and a 60% reduction in adult emergence. Because mortality was extremely high among early-instar larvae in high-density treatments, we do not have direct evidence that the mechanism by which patch arrangement operates is density dependent. However, the results of our experiments strongly suggest that dispersion of resource patches across a landscape reduces local densities by making non-resource patches available for use, thereby reducing intraspecific competition.

    Notizen: Abstract The production of polymeric microspheres via aerocolloidal processing is explored. A droplet consisting of a mixture of 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate and trimethylolpropane ethoxy triacrylate monomers was levitated electrodynamically in the path of an argon ion laser beam (λ=488 nm). The laser beam served as the source of illumination for elastic and inelastic light-scattering measurements. The reaction was followed by Raman spectroscopy, and polymerization was initiated with an α-amino acetophenone derivative which undergoes α-cleavage upon exposure to the laser light. The diameters of the suspended droplets were typically 20–80 μm, producing polymeric microspheres of approximately the same size. The size and refractive index of the product microspheres were determined by elastic light-scattering. The Raman data show the elimination of carbon-carbon double bonds and the formation of C−H bonds as rapid polymerization proceeded.
