Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In klaren Gewässern in Chile tauchende Humboldt-Pinguine zeigten zwei deutlich verschiedene Verhaltensweisen.
Notes: Summary Humboldt Penguins diving in clear water in Chile had two distinct behaviours; short dives $$(\bar x = 13.3 s)$$ where the birds remained within a metre of the surface and bounce dives, where the penguins descended the water column to the sea bed where they immediately returned to the surface. Here, dive time was correlated with water depth. Stomach pumped penguins had eaten predominantly pelagic school fish,Scomberesox, Engraulis andSardinops. Most prey (94 %) had been seized from below. We suggest that short, shallow dives are typical of travelling penguins. Bounce dives, however, would enable foraging penguins, which have an enhanced binocular field above the line of the bill, to perceive surface-swimming prey more easily because silvery clupeid fish appear as silhouettes.

Notes: Abstract Analysis of the historical record shows that reductions in guano production in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean were not related to El Niño events in the Pacific. Guano production in the Atlantic was negatively correlated with guano production in the Pacific. Significant reductions in guano production in the Atlantic occurred 1 to 4 years after increases in guano production in the Pacific. Negative association is consistent with the hypothesis that global shifts in weather associated with the Southern Oscillation affect guano production.

Description: We evaluated the quality and content of fish oil supplements in New Zealand. All encapsulated fish oil supplements marketed in New Zealand were eligible for inclusion. Fatty acid content was measured by gas chromatography. Peroxide values (PV) and anisidine values (AV) were measured, and total oxidation values (Totox) calculated. Only 3 of 32 fish oil supplements contained quantities of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that were equal or higher than labelled content, with most products tested (69%) containing 〈67%. The vast majority of supplements exceeded recommended levels of oxidation markers. 83% products exceeded the recommended PV levels, 25% exceeded AV thresholds, and 50% exceeded recommended Totox levels. Only 8% met the international recommendations, not exceeding any of these indices. Almost all fish oil supplements available in the New Zealand market contain concentrations of EPA and DHA considerably lower than claimed by labels. Importantly, the majority of supplements tested exceeded the recommended indices of oxidative markers. Surprisingly, best-before date, cost, country of origin, and exclusivity were all poor markers of supplement quality. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep07928

Description: We assessed whether omega-3 index (red blood cell concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) was associated with insulin sensitivity and other metabolic outcomes in 47 overweight men aged 46.5 ± 5.1 years. Participants were assessed twice, 16 weeks apart. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by the Matsuda method from an oral glucose tolerance test. Linear associations were examined; stratified analyses were carried out with participants separated according to the omega-3 index: lower tertiles (LOI; n = 31) and highest tertile (HOI; n = 16). Increasing omega-3 index was correlated with higher insulin sensitivity (r = 0.23; p = 0.025), higher disposition index (r = 0.20; p = 0.054), and lower CRP concentrations (r = −0.39; p 〈 0.0001). Insulin sensitivity was 43% higher in HOI than in LOI men (Matsuda index 6.83 vs 4.78; p = 0.009). Similarly, HOI men had disposition index that was 70% higher (p = 0.013) and fasting insulin concentrations 25% lower (p = 0.038). HOI men displayed lower nocturnal systolic blood pressure (−6.0 mmHg; p = 0.025) and greater systolic blood pressure dip (14.7 vs 10.8%; p = 0.039). Men in the HOI group also had lower concentrations of CRP (41% lower; p = 0.033) and free fatty acids (21% lower, p = 0.024). In conclusion, higher omega-3 index is associated with increased insulin sensitivity and a more favourable metabolic profile in middle-aged overweight men. Scientific Reports 4 doi: 10.1038/srep06697

Description: Keith Beven was amongst the first to propose and demonstrate a combination of conceptual rainfall-runoff modelling and stochastically-generated rainfall data in what is known as the “continuous simulation” approach for flood frequency analysis. The motivations included the potential to establish better links with physical processes and to avoid restrictive assumptions inherent in existing methods applied in design flood studies. Subsequently attempts have been made to establish continuous simulation as a routine method for flood frequency analysis, particularly in the UK. The approach has not been adopted universally, but numerous studies have benefitted from applications of continuous simulation methods. This paper asks whether industry has yet realised the vision of the pioneering research by Beven and others. It reviews the generic methodology and illustrates applications of the original vision for a more physically-realistic approach to flood frequency analysis through a set of practical case studies, highlighting why continuous simulation was useful and appropriate in each case. The case studies illustrate how continuous simulation has helped to offer users of flood frequency analysis more confidence about model results by avoiding (or exposing) bad assumptions relating to catchment heterogeneity, inappropriateness of assumptions made in (UK) industry-standard design event flood estimation methods and the representation of engineered or natural dynamic controls on flood flows. By implementing the vision for physically-realistic analysis of flood frequency through continuous simulation, each of these examples illustrates how more relevant and improved information was provided for flood risk decision-making than would have been possible using standard methods. They further demonstrate that integrating engineered infrastructure into flood frequency analysis, and assessment of environmental change are also significant motivations for adopting the continuous simulation approach in practice.
