Notes:
Summary 1. A mathematical analysis of binocular vision in insects is being developed. 2. The model proposed is based on the Müller theory of mosaic vision and on an idealized compound eye. By means of numerical corrections it might be adapted to any real insect eye. 3. If all the distances are related to the span between the two eyes, the structure of the binocular field of vision depends only on the divergence angles of the ommatidia. 4. The range of possible binocular distance localization is calculated. The field of best performance in depth perception is given at a distance equal to half the span between the eyes. 5. Animals with a wide eye span extend the total range of binocular vision to longer distances. 6. A critical distance at which an insect can possibly recognize an object to be bigger than its own body is calculated. 7. Size and time course of the patterns projected on the retina by moving objects can be analyzed by numerical calculations based on the model.
