Notes:
In previous publications a new theoretical approach to ion transport in neutral gases, based on the integral Boltzmann equation, was reported. The method is applicable to determining the evolution of a source of ions which are electrostatically accelerated through a not necessarily uniform neutral gas target. This paper presents experimental corroboration for two gas target configurations; (1) spatially uniform and (2) free-jet expansion, for protonated dimethyl-sulfoxide ions and nitrogen gas. The theory was in best agreement for the free-jet target and both configurations were used to determine an ion–molecule hard-sphere cross section of 3.6±0.15 A(ring).
