    Notes: Abstract Plans for the deployment of a comprehensive set of instruments designed to study the high-energy emissions of solar flares have been developed as part of a series of studies for an Advanced Solar Observatory (ASO). These studies have identified the Space Station as the preferred mode for the deployment of the full ASO. The accident of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, and the growth in the estimated costs for the Space Station during the fiscal year 1989 budget discussions, have created an uncertain climate within the United States Space Program, making it difficult to predict the schedule for major programs such as the ASO. Approaches to the deployment of instruments for the study of high-energy solar emissions alone, or in conjunction with other solar instruments are discussed. As an independent entity the High-Energy Facility could be on a co-orbiting platform.

    Description: The Pinhole Occulter Facility (POF) is designed for X-ray observations of solar activity, coronal structure and solar wind generation, and coronal transients. The four telescopes or positioning counters, the self-deployable 32-m boom, and the pointing-control actuator of the POF are described. The development of the facility is discussed. The configuration of the POF and means of maintaining its attitude control are examined.

    Description: The results of a study of the systems concept of the Pinhole/Occulter Facility (PDF) to fly on the Shuttle as a Spacelab payload are reported. In particular, attention is given to the POF configuration and structural/mechanical concepts; POF payload structural concept development; POF payload new baseline configuration; POF pointing requirements and the Spacelab Instrument Pointing System capabilities and limitations; and pointing control implementation approach. The discussion also covers POF command and data management system configuration; POF processor software assessment; and thermal design concept.

    Description: Scientific objectives and requirements are discussed for solar X-ray observations, coronagraph observations, studies of coronal particle acceleration, and cosmic X-ray observations. Improved sensitivity and resolution can be provided for these studies using the pinhole/occulter facility which consists of a self-deployed boom of 50 m length separating an occulter plane from a detector plane. The X-ray detectors and coronagraphic optics mounted on the detector plane are analogous to the focal plane instrumentation of an ordinary telescope except that they use the occulter only for providing a shadow pattern. The occulter plane is passive and has no electrical interface with the rest of the facility.

    Description: Approaches to the deployment of instruments for the study of high-energy solar emissions alone or in conjunction with other solar instruments are considered. The Space Station has been identified as the preferred mode for the deployment of the Advanced Solar Observatory, and it is suggested that a proposed High-Energy Facility could be on a coorbiting platform. The implementation plan for the High-Energy Facility involves the definition of the interface structures required to mount the facility instruments to the Space Station and the development of hard X-ray and gamma-ray imaging, spectroscopic, and polarimetric instruments.
