    Notes: Mechanical properties of a composite of glassy and rubbery polymers, ABS, were studied. Orientation induces two effects: (1) the intensity of the loss dispersion attributed to the rubbery component initially increases, then is reduced, and (2) a new loss peak at a temperature approximately 40°C below the original loss peak for the rubbery component appears. Assuming that this new peak is due to the dilated rubber particles embedded in the glassy matrix under strain, it is judged from the theory of Newman and Strella that a built-in strain of 6% would be sufficient to cause this shift in Tg. Above the Tg of the rubbery component, the strain energy required to break increases with temperature. The reinforcement through incorporation of rubber particles is accomplished by enhancing the ability of the glassy matrix to draw on a local, microscopic scale. Such a local cold drawing may well be identified with crazing of glassy polymers.

    Notes: Amorphous films of Lexan polycarbonate have been exposed to acetone vapor at controlled temperatures and partial pressures in order to study sorption kinetics and thermodynamics and polymer crystallization behavior. Sorption isotherms show a discontinuity is slope at or near the depressed glass transition, which itself was identified by torsion pendulum measurements. Crystallization abruptly begins to occur at partial pressures equal to or slightly above that of the solubility transition and is manifested by delayed desorption and whitening phenomena. In this process 20% crystallinity is usually developed, as measured by calorimetry which, however, produces a 40% drop in acetone solubility. Although the depressed glass temperature is near 0°C. in saturated atmospheres - a drop of 145°C. - the melting point is only depressed 60 or 70°C. Such disparity probably accounts for the enhanced polycarbonate crystallization rate in acetone over that in the dry bulk polymer above the normal Tg.

    Notes: Experimental techniques for observing total and spectral thermochemiluminescence (TCL) are discussed in general along with some data for the systems polycarbonate-O2, polycarbonate-CO, and polypropylene-O2. Since TCL is the process whereby heated materials undergo thermally activated reactions and emit light in excess of the amount prescribed by the blackbody radiation law, its study may be expected to yield information about the structure and degradation of the materials. It has been observed that TCL spectra are both time- and temperature-dependent. A simple mathematical model for analyzing TCL data under conditions of a linear heating rate is discussed. The result also should be of use in thermogravimetric analysis.
