    Description: Dimerization and oligomerization are general biological control mechanisms contributing to the activation of cell membrane receptors, transcription factors, vesicle fusion proteins, and other classes of intra- and extracellular proteins. Cell permeable, synthetic ligands were devised that can be used to control the intracellular oligomerization of specific proteins. To demonstrate their utility, these ligands were used to induce intracellular oligomerization of cell surface receptors that lacked their transmembrane and extracellular regions but contained intracellular signaling domains. Addition of these ligands to cells in culture resulted in signal transmission and specific target gene activation. Monomeric forms of the ligands blocked the pathway.     Notes: Nineteen fungal isolates, mostly plant pathogens cultured on agar, were subjected to fumigation with methyl bromide at known concentration x time product (CTP, concentration in mg/1 x time in h) in a fumigation chamber at controlled temperature. Survival of the fungi was determined by sub-culturing on fresh agar. An order of methyl bromide tolerance of the fungi was cetermined and it was shown that at low concentrations of the fumigant, prolonged exposure, to give a normally toxic CTP, did not kill important soil-borne pathogens. The implication of this in relation to field fumigations is discussed.

    Notes: Urediniospores of carnation rust remained viable for up to six months depending on the conditions of storage. Carnation plants became infected when urediniospores were kept in free water on the leaf for 24 h and uredinia appeared about two weeks after inoculation. Sprays of the fungicides benodanil, oxycarboxin, pyracarbolid or triadimefon did not eradicate established infection but root drenches of benodanil or oxycarboxin decreased rust symptoms when applied before or after inoculation of potted plants.Oxycarboxin, applied as a drench to carnation plants growing under commercial conditions, effectively halted the progress of rust infection whereas the disease became severe in plants which did not receive the fungicide.
