    Notes: BaFe12−(x+y)SnxCoyO19 single crystals, with 0≤x≤2 and 0≤y≤2, have been grown from high temperature solution by slow cooling using the TSSG method. Magnetic properties of these single crystals have been investigated using a commercial quantum design SQUID magnetometer in the temperature range 6 to 320 K and with a varying field from −5 to +5 T applied parallel and perpendicular to their c axis. It is found that the replacement of part of the Fe3+ ions by Co2+ and Sn4+ ones reduces the anisotropy as well as the saturation magnetization of the materials. For a small amount of substitution, the magnetization as a function of applied fields, which were oriented in the c axis, exhibits a hysteresis loop indicating that the magnetic domain wall moving was pinned by the imperfections of magnetic structures. When the substitution was increased to x+y=2.5, long distance magnetic coupling was destroyed, and the sample behaved as a magnetic granular material consisting of randomly distributed magnetic clusters. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: KTiOPO4 (KTP) samples heated in vacuum at temperatures in the 400–650 °C range show a broad optical absorption similar to that observed by H2 reduction. The position of the maximum depends on the reduction degree. The transparency of the sample is recovered by heating in air at high temperature (600 °C). Vacuum annealing leads to the reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ and also to the reduction of Fe, W, and Rh impurities present in the samples, as inferred from electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. X-ray irradiation at 15 K induces an optical absorption peaking at 585 nm. This absorption has been ascribed to the superposition of the 2T2→2E transition of Ti3+ in the two different Ti sites of the lattice. It is suggested that the absorption observed in vacuum-reduced samples consists of the overlapping of the latter contribution and a charge transfer band of Fe-Ti pairs. A loss of K and P ions has been observed after the annealing of KTP in vacuum at 800 °C forming a surface layer that scatters light. Moreover, the K and P loss decreases the optical absorption induced at lower temperature (T〈650 °C). © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The resonance fluorescence of neutral hydrogen illuminated by Hα radiation has been used as a technique for the spatially and temporally resolved density measurements of neutral hydrogen in high temperature plasmas, such as in the tokamak and magnetic mirror plasma fusion devices. The fluorescence signal, usually very weak and buried in the background of stray laser light and Hα emission, is very difficult to extract and its measurements are inaccurate. This paper discusses the improvement of the signal extraction using two optical path laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) methods. One optical path carries the fluorescence signal and the background (the stray laser light and Hα emission), whereas the other path carries only the background signal. By combining these two signals, a clean fluorescence signal can be isolated by subtracting out the background using a differential amplifier. The measurement is obtained instantaneously from these two signals which are taken simultaneously in one pulse rather than being extracted from two separate spectra taken in two sequential pulses (double pulses). This method, therefore, makes a significant improvement on the double pulse technique in terms of the accuracy of the measurement and the time resolution. Using this LIF technique the measurement of the neutral density profile in the exhaust of a tandem mirror plasma propulsion device is obtained and presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For the purpose of measuring the plasma momentum flux in a plasma system, a highly sensitive and precision balance has been developed. It can measure a force, an impulse, or thrust as low as 0.1 mN free of mechanical noise, electrical and magnetic pickups. The double pendulum system consists of two parallel conducting plates. One or both of the plates can be suspended by needles. The needle suspended plate (or plates) can swing freely with negligible friction because of the sharp points of the needles. When one of the plates is impacted by an impulse it will swing relatively to the fixed plate or other movable plate. The capacitance between the plates changes as a result of such a motion. The change of capacitance as a function of time is recorded as an oscillating voltage signal. The amplitude of such a voltage signal is proportional to the impacting force or impulse. The proportional factor can be calibrated. The forces can thus be read out from the recorded value of the voltage. The equation of motion for the pendulum system has been solved analytically. The circuit equation for the electronic measurement system has been formulated and solved numerically. Using this balance the thrust at the exhaust of a Tandem Mirror plasma thruster has been measured. The analytical solution of the overall characteristics agrees greatly with the measurement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The rotational dynamics of a segmentally flexible model, the elastic trumbbell, has been studied using a Brownian dynamics simulation technique. The model is composed of three beads jointed by two bonds. A potential that is quadratic in the bending angle describes the partial flexibility of the model. The correlation analysis of the simulated trajectories gives rotational correlation functions, of which we have preferentially studied those of the second Legendre polynomial of the reorientation angle of the bond and end-to-end vectors. The relaxation times derived from these correlation functions are compared with those predicted by other treatments of the rotational dynamics of segmentally flexible macromolecules.

    Notes: In this paper we investigate the ability of the Brownian dynamics simulation technique of Ermak and McCammon to evaluate rotational correlation functions of rigid hydrodynamic models. Concretely, we obtain from simulated trajectories the functions 〈Pi[cos θ(t)]〉, i=1,2 where Pi is the ith Legendre polynomial and θ(t) is the angle between two orientations, separated by time t, of a given vector. This function is closely related to the decay of fluorescence anisotropy and other time-dependent electro-optical properties. The simulation results are compared with exact results for these functions. We first consider dimers in a variety of conditions regarding the rigid constraint, the hydrodynamic interaction and the relative size of the two spheres. We next study bent trimers, for which the decays are typically multiexponential. In all cases we find that the simulated results of the correlation functions and the exact ones are in rather good agreement up to a time which is determined by the finite length of the simulated trajectory.

    Notes: In the present study, image processing techniques are applied to the chronophotographic visualizations of a cylinder wake generation. The flow patterns obtained by means of tracer particles are digitalized and processed in order to characterize the flow. This characterization is carried out by determining the evolution of the geometric parameters governing the wake, together with the streamfunction, vorticity, and pressure distributions. The present study reaches the moment of shedding of the first pair of vortices.

    Notes: Abstract. In the extremely arid island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain), a traditional water harvesting practice has evolved in slightly sloping areas, which receive runoff water from time to time. The system is particularly effective in the rehabilitation of saline–sodic soils where the improved fertility allows certain crops to be grown, which would not be possible without water harvesting. The influence of the water harvesting on soil fertility was investigated by comparing the properties of the cultivated soils receiving periodic runoff with those of natural control soils that did not receive runoff. The saline–sodic characteristics of the four uncultivated soils were absent from the four cultivated soils which, on average, contained only one quarter of the exchangeable sodium and more than twice the exchangeable calcium content. The clay and silt content of all four of the cultivated soils had been substantially enhanced relative to the control soils, by sediment contained in the runoff.
