Description: Monthly zonal albedo determinations made by Nimbus-6 ERB were used to form monthly zonal cloud fractions. The Fall-Winter-Spring seasons of 1975-76 are compared with the same seasons 1976-77.

Description: Infrared interferometric spectra obtained by Nimbus-4 instrumentation are analyzed for the spectral properties of cloud brightness temperatures as a function of wave number. It is shown that cloud-top altitude determination can be corrected for emissions from lower levels in the cloud if an estimate can be made of the particle density. Brightness temperature in the 700 to 950 wave number region can be used to estimate cloud number density.

Description: Spectral signatures of phytoplankton and other obscuring effects are considered in order to determine how to best use satellite data. The results of this study were then used to analyze the spectral data obtained from the ERTS-1 multispectral scanner (MSS). The analyzed satellite data were finally compared with surface ship measurements of chlorophyll concentration. It was found that the effects of water turbidity on the multispectral imagery can be discriminated by rationing the two shortest wavelength channels so that the effect of phytoplankton is enhanced.

Description: Spectral differences in the extinction of the 10.8- and 12.6-micron bands of the IR window region, due to optically thin clouds, were found in the measurements made by both an airborne broadband IR radiometer and the IR interferometer spectrometer (IRIS) aboard the Nimbus-4 satellite; the extinction at 12.6 microns was significantly larger than that at 10.8 microns; both water and ice particles in the clouds can account for such spectral difference in extinction. Multiple scattering radiative transfer calculations of IRIS data revealed this spectral feature about 100 to 20 km away from the high-altitude cold clouds; it is assumed that this feature is related to the spreading of cirrus clouds. Based on this assumption, mean seasonal maps of the distribution of thin cirrus clouds over the oceans were deduced from the IRIS data. The maps show that such clouds are often present over the convectively active areas, such as ITCZ, SPCZ, and the Bay of Bengal during the summer monsoon.

Description: A two-channel method has been developed to estimate the altitude of cirrus clouds over ocean areas with an expected altitude error less than or equal to plus or minus 50 mb. Reflected radiation is used to estimate cirrus emissivity in the 10- to 11-micron spectral interval. The cirrus altitude is determined from the emissivity estimate, a registered 10- to 11-micron measurement, and a vertical temperature profile. Nimbus 3 medium-resolution infrared radiometer measurements were used to establish the relationship between reflectance and 11-micron cirrus emissivity.

Description: The interaction between electromagnetic radiation and the earth's atmosphere is considered, taking into account windows in the electromagnetic spectrum, solar and terrestrial radiation, physical properties of the atmosphere, and clouds. The characteristics of upwelling radiation in the visible wavelengths are discussed along with infrared radiation and microwaves. Attention is given to radiant emittance, radiance, contrast, effects of atmospheric turbulence, ocean color, and questions concerning the classification of surface features with the aid of computers.

Description: Spectral features observed with the Mariner 9 interferometer spectrometer are identified as those of H2O ice. The measured spectra are compared with theoretical calculations for the transfer of radiation through clouds of ice particles with variations in size distribution and integrated cloud mass. Comparisons with an observed spectrum from the Tharsis Ridge region indicate H2O ice clouds composed of particles with a mean radius of 2.0 microns and an integrated cloud mass of .00005 g/sq cm.

Description: Orographically-induced lee-wave clouds were observed over New Mexico by a multichannel scanning radiometer on Skylab during December 1973. Channels centered at 0.83, 1.61 and 2.125 microns were used to determine the cloud optical thickness, thermodynamic phase and effective particle size. An additional channel centered at 11.4 microns was used to determine cloud-top temperature, which was corroborated through comparison with the stereographically determined cloud top altitudes and conventional temperature soundings. Analysis of the measured near-infrared reflection functions at 1.61 and 2.125 microns are most easily interpreted as indicating the presence of liquid-phase water droplets. This interpretation is not conclusive even after considerable effort to understand possible sources for misinterpretation. However, if accepted the resulting phase determination is considered anomalous due to the inferred cloud-top temperatures being in the -32 to -47 C range. Theory for the homogeneous nucleation of pure supercooled liquid water droplets predicts very short lifetimes for the liquid phase at these cold temperatures. A possible explanation for the observations is that the wave-clouds are composed of solution droplets. Impurities in the cloud droplets could decrease the homogeneous freezing rate for these droplets, permitting them to exist for a longer time in the liquid phase, at the cold temperatures found.
