A multicusp volume-produced H− ion source is described. The source chamber is 10 cm in diameter. The dependence of extracted H− current on arc current, arc voltage, gas pressure, and a filter's magnetic field has been investigated. It is found that a filter's magnetic field has a significant effect on the extracted electron current. A 4.4 mA H− beam has been obtained at 3.2 kW arc power; the density of the corresponding current is 6.9 mA/cm2.
