    Notes: Abstract The traditional theory of cardinal games deals with problems where the players are able to assess the relative performance of their decisions (or controls) by evaluating a payoff (or utility function) that maps the decision space into the set of real numbers. In that theory, the objective of each player is to determine a decision that minimizes its payoff function taking into account the decisions of all other players. While that theory has been very useful in modeling simple problems in economics and engineering, it has not been able to address adequately problems in fields such as social and political sciences as well as a large segment of complex problems in economics and engineering. The main reason for this is the difficulty inherent in defining an adequate payoff function for each player in these types of problems. In this paper, we develop a theory of games where, instead of a payoff function, the players are able to rank-order their decision choices against choices by the other players. Such a rank-ordering could be the result of personal subjective preferences derived from qualitative analysis, as is the case in many social or political science problems. In many complex engineering problems, a heuristic knowledge-based rank ordering of control choices in a finite control space can be viewed as a first step in the process of modeling large complex enterprises for which a mathematical description is usually extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. In order to distinguish between these two types of games, we will refer to traditional payoff-based games as cardinal games and to these new types of rank ordering-based games as ordinal games. In the theory of ordinal games, rather than minimizing a payoff function, the objective of each player is to select a decision that has a certain rank (or degree of preference) taking into account the choices of all other players. In this paper, we will formulate a theory for ordinal games and develop solution concepts such as Nash and Stackelberg for these types of games. We also show that these solutions are general in nature and can be characterized, in terms of existence and uniqueness, with conditions that are more intuitive and much less restrictive than those of the traditional cardinal games. We will illustrate these concepts with numerous examples of deterministic matrix games. We feel that this new theory of ordinal games will be very useful to social and political scientists, economists, and engineers who deal with large complex systems that involve many human decision makers with often conflicting objectives.

    Notes: Abstract The existence of linear Nash strategies for the linear-quadratic game is considered. The solvability of the coupled Riccati matrix equations and the stability of the closed-loop matrix are investigated by using Brower's fixed-point theorem. The conditions derived state that the linear closed-loop Nash strategies exist, if the open loop matrixA has a sufficient degree of stability which is determined in terms of the norms of the weighting matrices. WhenA is not necessarily stable, sufficient conditions for existence are given in terms of the solutions of auxiliary problems using the same procedure.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the decision making problem in continuoustime dynamic systems is considered for the situation with two decision makers and a hierarchical decision structure. The leader-follower strategy is studied. To implement the leader's strategy, we propose to use a sliding mode approach, which allows the leader to constrain the state of the system within some manifold of the state space and forces the follower to choose the strategy preferable for the leader. The corresponding sliding manifolds are derived from the classical variational problem formulation for a class of systems whose right-hand side is affine with respect to the two control inputs. Numerical examples are considered with simulations to illustrate the technique.

    Notes: Abstract The efficacy of abamectin 1%, when injected subcutancously in cattle at a dose of 200 μg/kg body weight, against the larval stages (grubs) of the flyDermatobia hominis was evaluated in two trials in endemic areas of Brazil and Argentina. Eighteen Holstein x Brahman castrated males and 16 Brahman-cross with natural infestations were used. Larvae were counted by instar in situ on both sides of each animal before treatment, and were expressed, identified as to stage and classified as live or dead 10 days after treatment. Further larval counts were made periodically until day 79 to evaluate the degree of reinfestation and the stage of larval development. Reinfestation was first detected in the abamectin-treated cattle on day 44. Live larvae were found on 6–8 (Argentina) and on all (Brazil) controls at each posttreatment examination. The difference in numbers of live larvae between treatment groups was statistically significant (P〈0.05) at all post-treatment examinations. These data show that abamectin at a dose of 200 μg/kg body weight is highly effective in the treatment and control of established parasitic stages ofD. hominis in cattle. No adverse reactions were observed in any of the treated animals.

    Notes: Abstract The properties of the Stackelberg solution in static and dynamic nonzero-sum two-player games are investigated, and necessary and sufficient conditions for its existence are derived. Several game problems, such as games where one of the two players does not know the other's performance criterion or games with different speeds in computing the strategies, are best modeled and solved within this solution concept. In the case of dynamic games, linear-quadratic problems are formulated and solved in a Hilbert space setting. As a special case, nonzero-sum linear-quadratic differential games are treated in detail, and the open-loop Stackelberg solution is obtained in terms of Riccati-like matrix differential equations. The results are applied to a simple nonzero-sum pursuit-evasion problem.

    Notes: Abstract The Stackelberg strategy in nonzero-sum games is a reasonable solution concept for games where, either due to lack of information on the part of one player about the performance function of the other, or due to different speeds in computing the strategies, or due to differences in size or strength, one player dominates the entire game by imposing a solution which is favorable to himself. This paper discusses some properties of this solution concept when the players use controls that are functions of the state variables of the game in addition to time. The difficulties in determining such controls are also pointed out. A simple two-stage finite state discrete game is used to illustrate these properties.
