    Notes: This historical and conceptual overview of riparian ecosystem restoration discusses how riparian ecosystems have been defined, describes the hydrologic, geomorphic, and biotic processes that create and maintain riparian ecosystems of the western USA, identifies the main types of anthropogenic desturbances occurring in these ecosystems, and provides an overview of restoration methods for each disturbance type. We suggest that riparian ecosystems consist of two zones: Zone I occupies the active floodplain and is frequently inundated and Zone II extends from the active floodplain to the valley wall. Successful restoration depends n understanding the physical and biological processes that influence natural riparian ecosystems and the types of disturbance that have degraded riparian areas. Thus we recommend adopting a process-based approach for riparian restoration. Disturbances to riparian ecosystems in the western USA result from streamflow modifications by dams, reservoirs, and diversions; stream channelization; direct modification of the riparian ecosystem; and watershed disturbances. Four topics should be addressed to advance the state of science for restoration of riparian ecosys-tems: (1) interdisciplinary approaches, (2) a unified framework, (3) a better understanding of fundamental riparian ecosystem processes, and (4) restoration po-tential more closely related to disturbance type. Three issues should be considered regarding the cause of the degraded environment: (1) the location of the causative disturbance with respect to the degraded riparian area, (2) whether the disturbance is ongoing or can be elim-inated, and (3) whether or not recovery will occur nat-urally if the disturbance is removed.

    Notes: A portable hard x-ray source has been developed for nondestructive testing, medical imaging, and flash x-ray radiography. The source is powered by a Marx generator that produces a 200 kV, 1.2 kA pulse of 60 ns full width at half maximum. The x-ray tube is composed of a tungsten anode and a mesh cathode. The time dependence of the voltage, current, and x-ray emission were measured and were in good agreement with computer simulations. The simulation model accounted for the 15 capacitors and 15 spark gap switches of the Marx generator and the perveance of the electron flow across the anode–cathode gap. The simulations indicated that the 5 J energy that was stored in the Marx generator was efficiently delivered to the x-ray tube. The measured x-ray exposure, 34 mR at a distance of 30 cm, was in good agreement with the calculated exposure. X-ray images are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of the x-ray source for medical imaging, nondestructive testing, and flash x-ray radiography.

    Notes: The paper describes and discusses the effect on the local benthic community of the discharge of a dense, saline, effluent into a nearshore area of the North Sea. The monitoring programme continued through the twenty-year period from 1970 until 1989 and includes effectively five years pre-discharge data. Samples were taken from fixed stations with a grab sampler and the invertebrate fauna were identified, wherever possible, to species. In addition, the particle size distribution of the sediment in each sample was determined. The discharge has had a clear effect on the benthic community.This extensive dataset, with its clear gradient of effect, also offers the opportunity of comparing the effectiveness of species and family level identification when studying the effect of disturbance. In this case the impacted area was as readily identifiable from the family as the species level data.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. A large reusable limnocorral is described, suitable for use in water bodies with substantial wave action. The clear plastic enclosure is 1 m in diameter, 25m deep, lightweight (∼50 kg), and inexpensive ($350 U.S.A.).2. The lower portion of the limnocorral is designed to hang motionless below the water surface, while an expandable floating collar section moves freely up and down with any wave action.3. Two limnocorrals, equipped with removable sedimentation traps at the bottom, were field tested successfully for 6 weeks in Flathead Lake, Montana, withstanding wave heights up to 1m. Chlorophyll levels and profiles of various physical-chemical parameters measured inside the limnocorrals were comparable to Flathead Lake values.4. Despite their large size, the limnocorrals are relatively easy to transport, install and retrieve.
