Abstract Variations in the layer plane configurations of PAN-based carbon fibres have been studied. The predominant configuration in the surface zones of all fibres is a general circumferential alignment. In highly graphitized fibres, the type of internal structure depends sensitively on fibre thickness. A duplex structure, comprising a core of radially oriented graphite layers and an outer circumferentially aligned zone, is only detected in fibres having diameters of approximately 8Μm. Thicker fibres contain more complex configurations, while thin fibres consist entirely of circumferentially aligned layers. Structural parameters associated with each layer alignment are reported.
