    640 x 480 MWIR and LWIR camera system developments (1992)

    Description: The performance of a 640 x 480 PtSi, 3,5 microns (MWIR), Stirling cooled camera system with a minimum resolvable temperature of 0.03 is considered. A preliminary specification of a full-TV resolution PtSi radiometer was developed using the measured performance characteristics of the Stirling cooled camera. The radiometer is capable of imaging rapid thermal transients from 25 to 250 C with better than 1 percent temperature resolution. This performance is achieved using the electronic exposure control capability of the MOS focal plane array (FPA). A liquid nitrogen cooled camera with an eight-position filter wheel has been developed using the 640 x 480 PtSi FPA. Low thermal mass packaging for the FPA was developed for Joule-Thomson applications.

    Description: Vacuum holddown fixtures hold photovoltaic solar cells during assembly into array. Tab attachment fixture holds single cell and interconnecting tabs during heat-lamp soldering. Array-layout fixture has computer-scribed layout template and holds cells (with attached tabs) while being placed in position and transferred to array-interconnection fixture, which holds cells during final soldering step. Group of heat lamps on trolley passes slowly over interconnection fixture to heat cells to soldering temperature.

    Parrallel Connections Would Improve Array Reliability (1982)

    Description: Hexagonnally-close-packed round solar cells are interconnected in series strings. Parallel contacts between cells at equipotential in adjacent series strings insure redundant current paths to relieve adverse effects of cell failures and mismatches. Parallel connections carry no current if cells are matched and functioning normally. If cell fails, tabs carry current to bypass inoperative cell.

    Heat Lamps Solder Solar Array Quickly (1982)

    Description: Interconnection tabs in a nine-solar-cell array have been soldered simultaneously with radiant heat. Cells and tabs are held in position for soldering by sandwiching them between compliant silicone-rubber vacuum platen and transparent polyimide sealing membrane. Heat lamps warm cells, producing smooth, flat solder joints of high quality.

    Description: Photocopying machine produces durable identification label. Process used for double glass photovoltaic-cell modules. Matrix of cells sandwiched between thin, flexible glass mats and covered above and below by protective sheets of glass. Label contains such information as manufacturer, model number, voltage and power ratings, and serial number. May also contain electrical-shock hazard warning and identification of positive and negative terminals. Method saves expense of procuring and applying conventional labels.
