Description: Molecular and isotopic compositions of void gases from Sites 618 and 619 were determined. The gases were predominantly methane with the C1/C2 ratios averaging 4,000 and 26,000 at Sites 618 and 619, respectively. The delta13C-C1 values at Site 618 were nearly constant, ranging from - 70.1 to - 73.7 per mil. delta13C-CH1 values for Site 619 between 76 and 178 meters sub-bottom ranged from - 94.8 to - 70.8 per mil, becoming progressively heavier with depth. The molecular and isotopic compositions at both sites are characteristic of biogenic methane. Small spheres (~ 1-2 mm diameter) of gas hydrates were observed in the Orca Basin between 20 and 40 m sub-bottom and were often associated with sandy sections. The hydrate was predominantly methane with a delta13-C1 of - 7 per mil and trace amounts of ethane, propane, and carbon dioxide. The isotopic value for the methane was similar to that of the nearest gas pocket, indicating that hydrate was formed from predominantly biogenic methane without isotopic fractionation.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Gas hydrates were recovered from eight sites on the Louisiana slope of the Gulf of Mexico. The gas hydrate discoveries ranged in water depths from 530 to 2400 m occurring as small to medium sized (0.5-50 mm) nodules, interspersed layers (1-10 mm thick) or as solid masses (〉 150 mm thick). The hydrates have gas:fluid ratios as high as 170:1 at STP, C1/(C2 + C3) ratios ranging from 1.9 to 〉 1000 and d13C ratios from -43 to -71 per mil. Thermogenic gas hydrates are associated with oil-stained cores containing up to 7% extractable oil exhibiting moderate to severe biodegradation. Biogenic gas hydrates are also associated with elevated bitumen levels (10-700 ppm). All gas hydrate associated cores contain high percentages (up to 65%) of authigenic, isotopically light carbonate. The hydrate-containing cores are associated with seismic "wipeout" zones indicative of gassy sediments. Collapsed structures, diapiric crests, or deep faults on the flanks of diapirs appear to be the sites of the shallow hydrates.

Notes: Elastic redatuming can be carried out before or after decomposition of the multicomponent data into independent PP, PS, SP, and SS responses. We argue that from a practical point of view, elastic redatuming is preferably applied after decomposition. We review forward and inverse extrapolation of decomposed P- and S-wavefields. We use the forward extrapolation operators to derive a model of discrete multicomponent seismic data. This forward model is fully described in terms of matrix manipulations.By applying these matrix manipulations in reverse order we arrive at an elastic processing scheme for multicomponent data in which elastic redatuming plays an essential role. Finally, we illustrate elastic redatuming with a controlled 2D example, consisting of simulated multicomponent seismic data.

Notes: We investigate a morphological instability that causes an InGaAs/InP multiquantum well structure grown on a vicinal (001) InP surface to spontaneously evolve into an array of InGaAs quasi-one-dimensional filaments buried in an InP matrix. To explain this behavior, we propose a step-flow growth model involving different lateral growth velocities for heteroepitaxy and homoepitaxy. A computer simulation based on the model agrees closely with the experiment.

Notes: We have discovered that hydroxide-coated In0.53Ga0.47Ag has the lowest known surface recombination velocity of any III-V semiconductor. To demonstrate the excellent electronic quality of such interfaces, we have measured the quantum shifts in the room-temperature luminescence spectrum of "naked'' In0.53Ga0.47As quantum wells (i.e., quantum wells with one face uncovered) in the thickness range 15–50 A(ring). These nearly ideal electronic surfaces should allow the fabrication of lateral quantum confinement structures that operate at room temperature.
