Notes: Amino units were grafted onto the surface of small particle size alumina by reaction with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Atactic polystyrene (PS) was sulfonated (1-14 mol% sulfonation) and mixed with both modified and unmodified alumina at filler loadings varying from 30 to 80 wt %. The resulting composites were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy in the glass transition region at a frequency of 1 Hz. Whereas mixtures of unsulfonated PS with either filler showed essentially no change in Tg with filler content, sulfonated PS saw its Tg increase as a function of filler loading at a rate which was greater following modification of the alumina. At a fixed filler loading of 30 wt%, the composite rubbery plateau modulus was found to increase with copolymer sulfonic acid content, while the loss tangent maximum corresponding to the glass transition broadened and decreased. These observations were interpreted as a manifestation of the decrease in polymer mobility brought upon by the formation of noncovalent crosslinks resulting from the proton transfer from the sulfonic acid units on the polymer to hydroxyl and/or amino units at the surface of the filler. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Composites of sulfonated polystyrene (PS-SSA) (0-8 mol % sulfonation) mixed with submicronic styrene-4 vinylpyridine (PS-4VP) (31 mol % 4VP content) microspheres were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy at 1 Hz in the glass transition region. The resulting proton transfer reaction from the SSA to the 4VP units was confirmed by IR spectroscopy, and led to a significant increase in the post-Tg Young's modulus as well as a lengthening of the rubbery plateau. Surprisingly, the addition of sulfonated polystyrene microspheres to styrene-vinyl pyridine copolymers had no such effects, possibly because of steric factors. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Microbeads possessing amine functionality at the surface have been prepared by two methods: In the first method, poly(4-vinylpridine/styrene) P(4VP/S) copolymer microbeads containing 13-69 mol % 4-vinylpridine (4VP) were synthesized from the monomers. In the second method, animated polystyrene (PS) particles were prepared by postpolymerization reactions on cross-linked PS and polychloromethylstyrene particles to obtain poly(aminomethylstyrene/styrene) and polydiethylaminomethylstyrene particles, respectively. Scanning electronic microscopy of P(4VP/S) microbeads showed regular and spherical particles having a diameter between 80 and 200 nm depending on 4VP content. The chemical structure of the various particles made was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and elemental analysis, whereas thermal properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Differential thermal analyses (DTA) were conducted on spinel-filled and hydrated spinel-filled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) terpolymer. Spinel and hydrated spinel displayed antioxidizing properties in the ABS composite. The enthalpies of oxidation for ABS, spinel-filled ABS, and hydrated spinel-filled ABS were 130, 15, and 0 J/g, respectively. Mechanical property measurements show that hydrated spinel reinforcing properties equal that of precipitated calcium carbonate treated with zinc stearate. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A systematic study of the mechanical properties of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) filled with cellulose was conducted. When benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was used and when the components were mixed at 160°, the yield strength of the LLDPE/cellulose composite increased by 70% whereas that of HDPE increased by only 15%. If BPO is replaced by dicumyl peroxide (DCP) the yield strength attains a plateau value at a lower concetration. Yield strength for the cellulose/LLDPE system, where the cellulose had been pretreated with silane, showed a relatively small improvement as compared to the effect of the peroxides addition. The presence of gel in the compound is also discussed.

Notes: Infrared spectroscopy is an important analytical technique for investigating polymeric materials. The physical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) depend on its chemical and physical structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and other infrared techniques are commonly used for studying crystallinity, configurational and conformational changes, and chain orientation in plasticized and non-plasticized PVC. The C-Cl stretching region is particularly sensitive to the macromolecular structure and important changes may be detected depending on fundamental parameters.

Description: Top-gated graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) have been fabricated using bilayer epitaxial graphene grown on the Si-face of 4H-SiC substrates by thermal decomposition of silicon carbide in high vacuum. Graphene films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy, and Hall measurements to estimate graphene thickness, morphology, and charge transport properties. A 27 nm thick Al 2 O 3 gate dielectric was grown by atomic layer deposition with an e-beam evaporated Al seed layer. Electrical characterization of the GFETs has been performed at operating temperatures up to 100 °C limited by deterioration of the gate dielectric performance at higher temperatures. Devices displayed stable operation with the gate oxide dielectric strength exceeding 4.5 MV/cm at 100 °C. Significant shifting of the charge neutrality point and an increase of the peak transconductance were observed in the GFETs as the operating temperature was elevated from room temperature to 100 °C.
