Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Stabilization of chloral homopolymer has been achieved by anionic cryotachensic polymerization of chloral in the presence of hindered aliphatic isocyanates. Initiation was accomplished with strong anionic initiators, such as lithium tertbutoxide or weak anions, such as in the phosphonium chloride from the reaction of Ph3P with chloral. Unlike aromatic isocyanates which are readily incorporated into polychloral, hindered aliphatic isocyanates reacted very sluggishly and apparently after the chloral polymerization had come to completion. Isocyanate terminated polychloral is thermally stable and has a maximum rate of thermal degradation well above 300°C. Its urethane end group can be seen in the IR in thick sections, but polymer samples have otherwise all the characteristics of chloral homopolymer.
