Notes: Summary A multicentre study of 6–10 weeks duration was performed in 60 ambulant hypertensive patients aged over 60 years to compare the efficacy of methyldopa and propranolol with particular reference to the occurrence of cold extremities and sleep disturbances. Blood pressure was effectively controlled by both drugs being reduced from a mean of 180/108 mmHg to 161/93 with methyldopa and 180/108 to 162/94 with propranolol. More patients treated with methyldopa (74%) achieved the target diastolic blood pressure of 95 mmHg or below compared with those treated with propranolol (58%). Side effects were more frequent in the propranolol group necessitating the withdrawal of four patients from the study. Only one patient on methyldopa was withdrawn. The incidence of cold extremities was significantly greater with propranolol. The occurrence of sleep disturbances was similar in both groups. In this group of elderly patients methyldopa was better tolerated than propranolol.

Notes: Summary Patients with essential hypertension were interviewed prior to entering therapeutic studies in general practice. Patients' age, sex and details of antihypertensive therapy (if any) were noted, as were their spontaneously reported symptoms. Complaints of cold extremities were highest in those taking a beta-blocker (4.1%). Those untreated or taking other therapies complained less often. Those patients taking a beta-blocker with ISA complained less often (3.1%) of cold extremities than those taking a beta-blocker without ISA (5.2%).

Notes: Summary Analysis of particle size distributions of four monodisperse sols containing particles in the range of diameter 0.8 to 3.5μ, using the Coulter Counter revealed, when compared with those obtained by electron microscopy, two basic anomalies. The first, an apparent build up in particle concentration to lower particle sizes, was found to be characteristic of the particular 30μ orifice in use at the time. The second, a positive skew in the distribution to larger particle sizes, which may be the result of coincidence effects. The need for thorough checking of the behaviour of an orifice tube before use with heterodisperse systems is stressed.

Notes: Summary The temperature dependence of the electrophoretic mobility ofGraphon and the electro-osmotic mobility ofPyrex in the presence of 10−4 mol dm−3 KCl and NaCl electrolytes at pH 3.8 over the temperature range 275 to 298 K have been determined. The corresponding zeta potentials for electrophoresis and electroosmosis have been calculated and compared with values expected on the basis of the known temperature dependence of the dispersion medium viscosity and relative permittivity. The zeta potential forGraphon shows the expected dependence whereas the magnitude and sign of (∂ζ/∂T) forPyrex electroosmosis differ from that expected. It is suggested that this discrepancy may indicate movement of the surface of shear or decrease in the Stern Potential associated with thePyrex surface.

Notes: Summary The precipitation of silver chloride from homogeneous solution has been studied by conductance measurements, electron microscopy and electrophoresis. The silver chloride was produced by the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride in aqueous silver nitrate solutions so as to give a wide range of [Ag+]/[Cl−] ratio at the onset of precipitation. In general the results compare with those obtained earlier (Part 1) on a similar system but using allyl chloride, although the sols produced show significantly less polydispersity in particle size and shape. The effect of surface active additives (benzyl alcohol, a hydrolysis product, and sodium dodecyl sulphate) on the growth behaviour and critical ion product is discussed in terms of surface charge and of the interface process which controls the early stages of precipitation.

Notes: Summary From a knowledge of the interactions between colloidal particles differing in both size and surface potential, the colloidal stability of polydisperse systems has been calculated. For dispersions having some stability, aGaussian distribution of radii or surface potential about a mean value results in a less stable dispersion than the corresponding monodisperse system. The difference between the stability of a polydisperse and a monodisperse system increases with increasing variation in surface potential and particle size about their mean values. Stability ratios for some latex dispersions have been recalculated allowing for the known size distributions of the particles and the effects on the interpretation of graphs of log (stability ratio) versus log (electrolyte concentration) have been noted.
