Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Untersucht werden starr/ideal-plastische Platten unter Verwendung der “quadratischen” (“Johansen-”)Fließbedingung.
Notes: Summary This paper examines the theory of rigid/perfectly plastic plates satisfying the ‘square’ or ‘Johansen’ yield criterion. Attention is focussed on the statically determinate ‘corner regime’ when the plate is subject to uniform distributed loads. The governing equations are semilinear and hyperbolic. The geometry of the characteristic networks is studied and two families of analytic solutions are obtained, expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. A general numerical procedure for constructing the characteristic networks is developed and used to derive new incomplete solutions for square and rectangular plates.

Notes: A procedure is described for solving plane strain rigid perfect-plasticity problems which lead to linear integral equations. The problem of finding the initial characteristic (slip-line), from which the complete field can be constructed, is reduced to a simple matrix inversion. Although the form of this matrix will depend on the particular problem concerned, it will be expressible in terms of a few fundamental matrices which occur in all problems of this type. The properties of these basic matrices and FORTRAN subroutines for assimilating them and for performing the corresponding linear transformations are given in detail. In illustration the procedure is applied to a drawing and to a strip rolling problem.

Notes: Two families of slipline field solutions for extrusion through unsymmetrical square dies, which have hitherto only been suggested qualitatively are computed and their ranges of validity determined. The solutions are of ‘indirect type’ and have been obtained using a technique by which the integral operators are approximated by matrices. The determination of the slipline angles and other field parameters corresponding to any given geometry requires the solution of a set of non-linear algebraic equations. This is accomplished using a non-linear optimization procedure.

Notes: Upper bound techniques are used to analyse the stability of slopes of material failing according to a non-linear failure criterion, such as closely jointed rocks. The global, extremal nature of upper bound calculations is discussed, as is the inverse use of such procedures for obtaining safe lower bound estimates for material strength properties in back analyses. Specific results are presented for the material model proposed by Hoek and Brown.

Notes: Solutions for the expansion of cylindrical and spherical cavities in sands are presented. The sand is modelled using recently proposed critical-state models in which the values of the friction and dilation angles depend on the deformation history. Similarity solutions are obtained which enable the limit pressure to be calculated as a function of the initial conditions. Comparisons with existing perfectly plastic theories are made and consequences for the interpretation of cone penetrometer measurements are indicated.

Notes: Boundary value problems for hardening/softening soils, such as Cam-Clay, usually require the extensive use of finite element methods. Here analytical and semi-analytical solutions for the undrained expansion of cylindrical and spherical cavities in critical state soils are presented. The strain is finite, the initial cavity radius is arbitrary and the procedure applicable to any isotropically hardening materials. In all cases only simple quadratures are involved, and in the case of the original Cam-Clay a complete analytical solution can be found. In addition to providing models of the behaviour of displacement piles and pressuremeters these results also provide valuable benchmark solutions for verifying various numerical methods.

Notes: Elastic-plastic deformations in pavements consisting of layers of different frictional materials are investigated. The upper bound, kinematic shakedown theorem is used to obtain estimates of the critical shakedown loads. Fully general three-dimensional deformations are considered. The influence of the loading distribution, interactions between loads, and the effect of varying the thickness, stiffness and strength of the layers are explored. Consequences of this investigation for particular existing designs of flexible pavements are investigated. In particular, it is found that the strength of the subgrade has no effect on the magnitude of the critical shakedown load.

Notes: Elastic/plastic deformations in frictional materials under moving surface loads are investigated. The static and kinematic shakedown theorems are used to obtain estimates of the critical shakedown load for plane strain deformations under trapezoidal surface load distributions and for three-dimensional deformations under loads distributed over circular areas. It is shown that the material can fail either by incremental collapse or in cyclic or alternating collapse modes.
