    Notes: This paper argues that industrial responses to ‘green’ pressures may fruitfully be explored using a stakeholder framework. However, the common view of an objective configuration of stakeholders is replaced with one that favours an interpretive perspective. Managers are viewed as crucial mediators of stakeholder influence; how they identify, define and construct stakeholders is an important feature of the meaning of greening and an industry's subsequent response. A qualitative study of managers in four UK industries - supermarkets, automotives, power and chemicals - is reported. the effect of a small number of stakeholders - campaigners and regulators - is examined in some detail, distinguished differentially according to their perceived legitimacy and the threat they pose to industry. Also examined is the large group of traditionally powerful stakeholders - customers, creditors and employees - who fail markedly to impact on industry's greening. the implications of the findings for pro-environmental change and stakeholder theory are discussed.

    Notes: Compares two leading brands in the USA in late 1999: the leading e-retailer, Amazon.com, and the leading "bricks and mortar" retailer, Wal-Mart. The two brands were found to enjoy, in their respective markets, similar consumer brand equity, defined in terms of the degree of loyalty felt by category consumers. An examination of UK consumer banking services shows that the newer "direct" banks, which concentrate on Internet and telephone trading, in fact enjoy particularly strong ties of loyalty with their existing customers. The hypothesis of the enormous commoditising impact of e-retailing is not borne out by the evidence in these two areas where Internet trading has established itself in the USA and the UK. The issues that face the new e-commerce entrepreneurs remain the same as for "old economy" businesses, namely maximising customer retention, minimising loss and optimising new customer acquisition.

    Notes: AbstractThe authors report the results of a small-scale study of the attitudes of 174 British companies to managing their technology. Their data sources were replies to a questionnaire and interviews with 18 senior managers of the respondent companies. They relate their findings to current academic thinking about technolgy strategy, of which a bibliography and critical review is presented in the paper.The results showed that the firms in the survey did not give much specific attention to technology when formulating their strategies. Some do not have a clear notion of what is meant by ‘their technology’, and others have difficulty in deciding its character. In any case a ‘firm's technology’ is usually seen as a cluster of technologies, which is enmeshed in a network of external technologies such as those practised by suppliers and customers, rather than as a single entity. After in-house R&D the most often used forms of technology acquisition are licensing-in and contract R&D. The import of technology presents difficulties, such as codifying it in usable form and making sure that there are in-house staff capable of using it.The authors conclude overall that few firms in the sample can assess their technological strengths and weaknesses or clearly conceptualize their situation. They remark that academic approaches to technology strategy are oversimplified and do not sufficiently address the main problems in this area, which are to help managers to understand the nature of their technology position and the technological network of which their firm forms a part.

    Notes: Electron microscopy was used to investigate the apparent induction of virus particle production in bacteria undergoing digestion by ciliates. Results showed that numbers of bacteria containing virus particles increased by a factor of 25 when enclosed within ciliate food vacuoles. It was also found that 10% of these particles survived the digestion process to be released back into the aquatic habitat within faecal pellets. The possibility of virus gene transfer occurring between lysogenically infected bacteria that survive the ciliate digestive processes, is also considered.

    Notes: Abstract Most of the small ciliate protozoa, including Dasytricha ruminantium and Entodinium spp. living in the rumen of sheep, were found to have intracellular bacteria. These bacteria were not present in digestive vacuoles. They showed characteristic coenzyme F420 autofluorescence and they were detected with a rhodamine-labelled Archaea-specific oligonucleotide probe. The measured volume percent of autofluorescing bacteria (1%) was close to the total volume of intracellular bacteria estimated from TEM stereology. Thus it is likely that all of the bacteria living in the cytoplasm of these ciliates were endosymbiotic methanogens, using H2 evolved by the host ciliate to form methane. Intracellular methanogens appear to be much more numerous than those attached to the external cell surface of ciliates.
