    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Sporozoites of L. simondi were maintained in a viable state for 7 months in liquid nitrogen. Comparison of parasite development initiated with fresh and frozen sporozoites showed a delay in development of each stage studied. Comparisons of prepatency, first elongate gametocytes, peak density of round and elongate forms, anemia and disappearance of megaloschizonts were made. In each phase there was a delay of 2–3 days in ducks infected with frozen sporozoites.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Administration of dexamethasone to rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi resulted in the development of exceedingly large populations of trypanosomes which were fatal to their hosts. The elevated levels of parasitemia in treated rats early in infections were thought not to be a result of an increased reproductive rate. However, trypanosomes in treated rats 2 days postinfection did have a higher coefficient of variation in total length and a greater percentage of dividing forms than those observed from infected rats which were not given the drug. The course of infection may be markedly altered not only in intensity but also in length by this corticosteroid. It is suggested that dexamethasone administered at the levels recorded to rats infected with T. lewisi inhibits the production of ablastin and trypanocidal antibodies.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Sporozoites of Eimeria tenella were injected into the peritoneal cavity of normal chickens and chickens immunized against E. tenella. In some experiments normal scrum and serum from resistant chickens were injected prior to the injection of sporozoites. After 15 or 30 minute periods of intraperitoneal incubation, exudates were harvested and the occurrence of intracellular sporozoites was determined.Only macrophages and degranulated granulocytes were observed to contain sporozoites. There was no significant difference between the number of macrophages obtained from normal chickens (normal macrophages) which contained sporozoites and the number of macrophages obtained from immune chickens (immune macrophages) which contained sporozoites. Significantly fewer immune macrophages treated with immune serum contained sporozoites than untreated normal or immune cells, normal macrophages treated with either serum, or immune macrophages treated with normal scrum.Sporozoites in untreated normal macrophages did not appear to be harmed by the intracellular environment, based on structural observations. The majority of sporozoites in macrophages from all other groups were difficult to distinguish within the cytoplasm and were visibly distorted.It is hypothesized that the presence of fewer infected macrophages in exudates of immune chickens and serum-treated normal chickens was caused by an enhanced ability of these cells to destroy the parasite.Similar observations were noted in the case of sporozoites within degranulated granulocytes of experimental groups. The lack of understanding of the degranulation phenomenon makes it difficult to interpret these findings.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. The pathogenicity for mice and cell culture, and the growth rates in vitro of two strains of Tritrichomonas foetus were compared. A new strain of T. foetus (T. foetus“G”) which was isoated less than a year before use in the experiments described, was more pathogenic to mice but had a longer generation time than an old strain (T. foetus“M”). The old strain has been maintained in vitro for over five years. The characteristics observed for the strains of T. foetus examined resembled those of T. vaginalis rather than T. gallinae. In strains of the latter species there is a good correlation between growth rate and pathogenicity.

    Notes: Abstract Shake up processes accompanying core ionizations for some simple unsaturated fluorocarbon systems have been studied experimentally by ESCA. Comparison has been made of shake up intensities with those calculated theoretically within the sudden approximation using the equivalent cores concept and the INDO SCF MO formalism. The observed transitions are identified as arising from π*←π excitation accompanying core ionizations and the theoretical calculations give a good overall account of the transition probabilities.

    Notes: Abstract Ab initio calculations have been carried out on CO and N2 and the relevant core hole states with different basis sets to investigate differences in geometries and force constants. From these calculations vibrational band profiles of the core level ESCA spectra for these molecules have been interpreted, obviating the need to rely on data pertaining to the equivalent core species. The agreement with experimental profiles is excellent. The O1s level of CO which has not been subjected to detailed theoretical analysis previously, is predicted to show substantial vibrational structure in excellent agreement with recently acquired experimental data. The effect of temperature on the band profiles has also been considered. Theoretically derived core binding and relaxation energies of these systems have been investigated both as a function of basis set, and of internuclear distance. Density difference contours have been computed and give a straightforward pictorial representation of the substantial electron reorganizations accompanying core ionizations. Small basis sets with valence exponents appropriate to the equivalent core species when used in hole state calculations describe bond lengths, force constants, core binding energies and relaxation energies with an accuracy comparable to that appropriate to the corresponding extended basis set calculations.
