    Abstract: Introduction to GNSS Geodesy is a concise reference for beginners and experts in GNSS-based satellite geodesy. It covers all of the important concepts in almost a third of the space of the other GNSS books. Th e book begins with a case study in Augmented Reality to set the stage for what is to come and then moves on to the key elements of GNSS geodesy that make accurate and precise geopositioning possible. For example, it is important to understand the geodetic reference systems and the associated GNSS data processing strategies that enable both accurate and high-precision geopositioning. Chapter 2 gives an overview of GNSS constellations and signals, highlighting important characteristics. Chapter 3 then introduces reference systems in geodesy, covering such topics as time systems, geodetic datums, coordinate systems, coordinate conversions and transformations, and International Terrestrial Reference Frame. Th is lays the framework for the rest of the book. Chapters 4 and 5 dig deep into mathematical formulation of GNSS parameter estimation and observation models. All the concepts are presented clearly and concisely, with diagrams to assist reader comprehension. Chapter 6 describes Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) networks and their role in geodesy and definition of reference frames. Various global and regional CORS networks are presented in this section. Th e chapter also covers GNSS data and common formats such as RINEX and RTCM. Chapter 7 introduces the whole cycle of GNSS data processing, including preprocessing, ambiguity fixing, and solution reprocessing methods as commonly used in both epoch solutions and time series data. Th e book concludes with appendices on orbit modelling, GNSS linear combinations, application examples, and an example linear model.

    Description: The warming trend at the end of the last glacial was disrupted by rapid cooling clearly identified in Greenland (Greenland Stadial 1 or GS-1) and Europe (Younger Dryas Stadial or YD). This reversal to glacial-like conditions is one of the best known examples of abrupt change but the exact timing and global spatial extent remain uncertain. Whilst the wider Atlantic region has a network of high-resolution proxy records spanning GS-1, the Pacific Ocean suffers from a scarcity of sub-decadally resolved sequences. Here we report the results from an investigation into a tree-ring chronology from northern New Zealand aimed at addressing the paucity of data. The conifer tree species kauri (Agathis australis) is known from contemporary studies to be sensitive to regional climate changes. An analysis of a ‘historic’ 452-year kauri chronology confirms a tropical-Pacific teleconnection via the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO). We then focus our study on a 1010-year sub-fossil kauri chronology that has been precisely dated by comprehensive radiocarbon dating and contains a striking ring-width downturn between ∼12,500 and 12,380 cal BP within GS-1. Wavelet analysis shows a marked increase in ENSO-like periodicities occurring after the downturn event. Comparison to low- and mid-latitude Pacific records suggests a coherency with ENSO and Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation change during this period. The driver(s) for this climate event remain unclear but may be related to solar changes that subsequently led to establishment and/or increased expression of ENSO across the mid-latitudes of the Pacific, seemingly independent of the Atlantic and polar regions.

    Notes: The usual computation methods in refraction seismic in the Sahara often involve considerable shot distances. Therefore, in addition to a high consumption of explosives, difficulties of operation and interpretation arise.In order to cut down the shot distances, it was necessary to study with great care the refracted waves having the shortest possible traveling path along the marker. Such paths correspond to the zone of great relative energy resulting, on one hand, from the sudden increase of reflected energy beyond the critical angle (total reflection) and, on the other hand, from the sudden appearance of refracted energy. The proposed method is founded on correlations of traces located in this “critical zone” on the different records shot on a profile; in order to get around certain difficulties due to insufficient knowledge of the marker velocity, the interpreter is led to select a constant correlation distance, at least for sections of the profile.The paper describes in detail the setting up and utilization of the proposed method, analyses a few examples and gives an estimate of the advantages and the restrictions of this method.

    Notes: It has been necessary to resort to the use of “long-line” refraction marine operations in certain areas where it proved impossible to eliminate singing from reflection records despite the number and variety of programs at our disposal for this purpose.Experience has shown that manual processing of offshore refraction records takes a disproportionate length of time in comparison with the surveys themselves, and this is incompatible with the requirements for choosing the site of an exploration well. It thus became necessary to find an “industrial approach” to the solution of this processing problem.It was apparent that automatic picking could also facilitate the interpretation of land refraction data, and that in the case of both marine and land work the interpretations would be more accurate when factors were taken into account which could not be considered when working without the aid of a digital computer.For these reasons a set of programs was developed for automatic picking and interpretation of refracted arrivals.The picking itself consists in searching for the maximum values of the normalized cross-correlation functions of the traces with a “model” trace. The first results thus supplied are: “picked” times, intercept times, maximum values of the correlations, and the values of the tie constants between overlapping spreads.Next, the construction of the relative intercept time curves is performed; a statistical analysis of these curves then allows the determination of the offset distance.From these elements,⊙ either the delay time curve is produced, after ensuring correct reciprocal times by means of additional minor corrections.Such work is carried out in order to enable the geophysicist to gain a sound idea of the quality of the interpretation. To assist in this aim, part of the trace on both sides of the pick is plotted on the final documents. Valid groupings of several traces involving the same amount of refraction data are thus possible.⊙ or the refractor depth is constructed with the wavefront method, making use of the relative intercept times.Such a procedure, which is normally applied to first breaks, can also be used for later arrivals exhibiting slight interference and should represent an important step towards processing secondary arrivals with high interference.The development of this package, in response to a need which is shared by both SNPA and CGG, is the result of the joint efforts of the Geophysical Group of SNPA's Pau Research Center and CGG's Technical and Scientific Departments.
