Summary Programmed temperature chromatography, characterized by a progressive increase of the temperature in the column, presents numerous advantages over isothermic chromatography for which several columns are necessary. The theoretical foundation is in full evolution and allows a judicious choice of the factors affecting the separations: forecasting the duration and the retention temperature by graphic, analytical or normographical methods. The author discusses the influence exerted on these factors by the rate of the temperature rise, the enthalpy, the initial temperature, the number of carbon atoms, the polarity of the stationary phase, and gives an outline of the calculation of the efficiency and resolution in programmed temperature chromatography. The results show that the choice of the final values conditioning a given separation remains still a matter of compromise. Practical informations and a description of the essential parts of the equipment nowadays used are presented.
