Notizen: Conclusions 1. A temporary connection is formed, as reflected in single unit activity and evoked potentials (EPs) in the sensomotor cortex of waking, unimmobilized rabbits, during paired combination of stimulation of the medial lemnicus (ML), reticular tegmental nucleus (RF), and pyramidal tract (PT). The temporary connection is manifested in the dynamics of evoked responses and in changes in electrical activity in the place of usual application of the second stimulus when it is withheld. 2. In response to a combination of stimuli as indicated above the change in singleunit responses affects mainly the late components and occurs twice or three times more often than to simple repetition of the same stimulus. The dynamics of responses to combined stimuli is most clearly defined if the first stimulus consists of stimulation of RF or ML. On omission of the second stimulus, one-third of the neurons develop changes in discharge frequency, corresponding in time mainly to the late component of the response to the second stimulus. 3. Combined evoked potentials to a combination of stimuli undergo similar changes to those in single unit responses. On omission of the second stimulus a complex series of electrical waves consisting of elements of true reproduction of EP and waves outwardly differing in character from EPs to real stimuli develops in the place of its usual application in 75% of cases.

Notizen: Abstract The activity of neurons of the sensorimotor cortex during the paired combination of stimulations of brain structures (the medial lemniscus, the reticular nucleus of the midbrain tegmentum, and the pyramidal tract), with an interstimulus interval of 1.2 sec, was investigated in awake nonimmobilized rabbits. During the omission of the reinforcing stimulus at a place of its expected delivery, a complicated complex of reorganizations of the impulse activity of the neurons develops, consisting of the reproduction of responses and changes in impulse activity which differ in configuration from them, and which usually appear at later periods. The direct application of acetylcholine to the cortex facilitates the manifestation of both types of reorganizations of the neuronal activity. The application, on the other hand, of atropine suppresses primarily the second type of reorganizations. In addition, acetylcholine increases the total duration of these electrical indices of the temporary connection of the developed reactions, while atropine decreases it.

Notizen: Unanesthetized rabbits exposed to 12.5-cm microwaves at a field intensity of 40 mW/cm2 in the region of the head showed an increase in the number of slow waves and spindleshaped firings in the EEG and a change in the discharge frequency of neurons in the visual cortex in 41-52% of the cases. An enhancement of the evoked response of visual cortex neurons to light was observed in 61% of the cases and a facilitation of the driving response in 80% of all cases. It is concluded that the evoked response is a more sensitive indicator of the microwave effect than background activity. The effects of the fields were most distinctly observed with the driving response.
