Notes: Due to the more stringent environmental requirements imposed on electric utilities, utilities must adopt new technologies for the cleaner production of electricity. This paper suggests the introduction of renewable energy and energy storage systems to fossil fueled existing electric utilities for the cleaner production of electricity with hourly emission target. A cost effective dispatching algorithm for clean and economic operation of electric utilities has been proposed. The efficacy of the proposed approach is illustrated with the help of a 25-bus, 6-generator sample utility. This paper would be useful for electric utilities, consultants, regulatory bodies, policy makers and planners.

Notes: At present the Indian Power Sector is seriously considering the optimization of their existing inter-regional transmission links, and also planning to form new inter-regional links. As one of the options, Thyristors Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC) scheme has been implemented recently in the Uttar Pradesh State, in the 400 kV links between Anpara and Unnao, and further efforts have not been made yet. At this stage, as a helping hand to the Power Sector in its decision-making, this paper explores the need for further transmission system upgrading, and based on a prototype transmission system study, it identifies a few more inter-regional transmission links for TCSC implementation.

Description: Energy efficiency is the simplest and cost-effective approach for power and process industries to meet a growing demand for cleaner energy, and this applies to the power generating industries as well. Energy efficiency of fossil-fuelled power systems in developed as well as developing countries is abnormally low, consuming high quantity of fuel to generate per unit electricity, which is a fundamental issue throughout the globe. Though energy efficiency improvements are possible at all sections of a power system, this paper put forward an energy efficiency enhancement opportunity at the power generation station itself by proper scheduling of the generating units. To show the efficacy of the proposed strategy, an economic dispatch algorithm has been applied to several dissimilar realistic systems at different load conditions and the outcome of one such realistic system is presented in this paper.
