    Notes: Summary The methylene carbon resonance patterns of partially epimerized isotactic polystyrenes were measured and interpreted in terms of tetrad and hexad stereosequence distributions that were calculated by Monte Carlo simulation of the epimerization process. Empirical rules were developed for assigning hexad resonances. Calculated spectra based on these assignments and on the Monte Carlo results were in reasonably good agreement with experimental spectra. The resonances of mmtype methine carbons were noted to occur about 0.2 ppm downfield from other methine carbon resonances.

    Notes: Summary A procedure for epimerizing isotactic polystyrene and a Monte-Carlo computer program for simulating polymer epimerization reactions have been developed. The 300 MHz methine proton resonance patterns of partially epimerized isotactic polystyrene and of free radical initiated polystyrene have been analyzed. The latter polymer is essentially atactic (σ=0.45±0.05) and has the same nmr spectrum as completely epimerized polystyrene. Conventional polystyrene therefore seems to be at stereochemical equilibrium.

    Notes: Abstract For a rubber-toughened piperidine-DGEBA epoxy resin, the interface between the rubber particle and the epoxy resin matrix was modified by an epoxide end-capped carboxyl terminated butadiene and acrylonitrile random copolymer (CTBN). The end-capping epoxides used were a rigid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (Epon 828), a short-chain flexible diglycidyl ether of propylene glycol (DER 736), and a long-chain flexible diglycidyl ether of propylene glycol (DER 732). The microstructures and the fracture behaviour of these rubber-modified epoxy resins were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Their thermal and mechanical properties were also investigated. In the rubber-modified epoxy resins, if the added CTBNs were end-capped by a flexible diglycidyl ether of propylene glycol (DER 732 or DER 736) before curing, the interfacial zone of the undeformed rubber particle, the degree of cavitation of the cavitated rubber particle on the fracture surface and the fracture energy of the toughened epoxy resin were all significantly increased. The toughening mechanism based on cavitation and localized shear yielding was considered and a mechanism for the interaction between cavitation and localized shear yielding that accounts for all the observed characteristics is proposed.

    Notes: This paper investigates the effect of matrix ductility on toughness in a carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acryionitrile copolymer (CTBN) toughened diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)-piperidine system. Two kinds of epoxides were blended separately into this system to change the matrix ductility. One was a rigid and polyfunctional 4,4′-diaminodiphenol methane (MY720), and the other was a flexible diglycidyl ether of propylene glycol (DER732). The matrix Tg was significantly changed, but without alteration of the microstructure of the dispersed rubbery phase. The result of fracture energy tests reveals that the toughness of the neat epoxy resins increases slightly with the increase in the resin ductility. The toughness of the rubber-modified epoxy resins increases strongly with matrix ductility. Studies on the morphology of the toughened systems and their fracture surfaces indicate that the size of the plastic deformation zone under constant rubbery-phase morphology is determined by the multiple but localized plastic shear yielding. Increasing matrix ductility increases the size of the plastic deformation zone by inducing more extensive shear yielding. In addition, fracture surfaces reveal that as the matrix rigidity is increased, an increasing proportion of the fracture energy is dissipated by rubber cavitation during crack initiation.

    Notes: Liquid hydroxyl-terminated cis-polybutadiene (cis-HTPB) having various molecular weights were cured with trimethylol propane (TMP) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) by the one-shot method and the physical properties of these elastomers obtained were measured. The effect of pseudo-crosslinks was not observable and the calculated value of the number average molecular weight of the network chain (Mc) between each TMP crosslink unit was found to be pertinent in determining the tensile strength, modulus, tear strength, and hardness. The mechanical properties increased with increase in the 1/Mc value and showed a linear relationship with the high 1/Mc values (Mc below about 3000). On the other hand, chain entanglement becomes more important in affecting the mechanical properties when Mc was higher than 3000, and physical properties were less dependent on 1/Mc values in the lower range.

The thermal and mechanical properties were also investigated. With an increase in the amount of end-capping DER732, the interfacial zone of an undeformed rubber particle and the degree of cavitation of the rubber cavity on the fracture surface were greatly increased. At the maximal addition of DER732, fracture energy (GIc) for this toughened epoxy resin containing 10phr CTBN rubber increases up to 2.4 fold compared to that of a conventional CTBN-toughened epoxy resin, but the thermal and the mechanical properties remained quite unaffected. The modification on the interfacial property provides a new technique in the improvement of fracture toughness of a rubber-toughened epoxy resin.
