    Description: The effects and interactive effects of different nitrogen (N) sources (ammonium, nitrate, and urea) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations were investigated on Alexandrium tamarense, a harmful marine dinoflagellate, by measuring its growth (μ), extracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA), and its toxicity to zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo. The μ and CA were influenced more strongly by CO2 concentrations rather than by N sources; significant effects of CO2 on μ and CA were observed under low CO2 concentration (LC) conditions compared to high CO2 concentration (HC) conditions. The ammonium and nitrate media under LC conditions had the maximum μ and CA, which was inhibited under HC conditions. The embryotoxic effects were influenced more strongly by the N sources than by CO2 concentrations, thus excluding the lower deformation in urea under HC conditions. Moreover, the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and catalase (CAT) were detected in normal (untreated) zebrafish embryos, and among them, the level of SOD was the highest. In summary, this study provides a clear insight for understanding the effects and interactive effects of N sources and CO2 concentrations on the growth and toxicity of harmful dinoflagellates.

    Description: The study aimed to unravel the interaction between ocean acidification and solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in Chaetoceros curvisetus. Chaetoceros curvisetus cells were acclimated to high CO2 (HC, 1000 ppmv) and low CO2 concentration (control, LC, 380 ppmv) for 14 days. Cell density, specific growth rate and chlorophyll were measured. The acclimated cells were then exposed to PAB (photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) + UV-A + UV-B), PA (PAR + UV-A) or P (PAR) for 60 min. Photochemical efficiency (phi PSII), relative electron transport rate (rETR) and the recovery of PHPSII were determined. HC induced higher cell density and specific growth rate compared with LC. However, no difference was found in chlorophyll between HC and LC. Moreover, phi PSII and rETRs were higher under HC than LC in response to solar UVR. P exposure led to faster recovery of phi PSII, both under HC and LC, than PA and PAB exposure. It appeared that harmful effects of UVR on C. curvisetus could be counteracted by ocean acidification simulated by high CO2 when the effect of climate change is not beyond the tolerance of cells.

    Description: A fully coupled simulation of ecophysiological, hydrological and biochemical processes is significant for better understanding the individual and interactional impact of sophisticated land surface processes under future disturbances from nature and human beings. In this study, we spatially explicitly modelled evapotranspiration (ET) and photosynthesis (GPP) using a distributed hydrological model, Dynamic Land Model DLM-Ecohydro, over the Upper Heihe watershed for the years of 2013 and 2014. After considering the lateral water movements, the model fairly captured the variations in ET (R2 = 0.82, RMSE = 1.66 mm/day for 2013; R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 1.53 mm/day for 2014) and GPP (R2 = 0.71, RMSE = 5.25 gC/m2/day for 2013; R2 = 0.81, RMSE = 3.38 gC/m2/day for 2014) compared with the measurements from the Arou monitoring station. Vegetation transpiration accounted for total ET of around 65% and 64% in 2013 and 2014, respectively. A large spatial variability was found in these two indicators (14.30–885.36 mm/year for annual ET and 0–2174 gC/m2/day for annual GPP) over the watershed. Soil texture and vegetation functional types were the major factors affecting ET and GPP spatial variability, respectively. The study manifested a coupled water–carbon mechanism through the strong linear relationship between the variations in ET and GPP and the control of hydrological processes on the carbon cycle at the watershed scale. Although the model had a reasonable performance during most parts of the growing seasons, the lack of a soil freezing–thawing scenario caused inevitable discrepancies for the simulation of soil water and heat transfer mechanisms, hence inaccurately estimating the biophysiological processes in the transition period of winter to spring, which should be further improved especially for alpine regions.

    Description: Abstract Spectroscopic properties of Sm3+‐doped borate glass with silver aggregates were investigated, and it was found that the glass presented broad excitation and emission band covering violet‐infrared region. Furthermore, the optical gain coefficients at various wavelengths were measured via an amplified spontaneous emission technique, it was confirmed that the glass displayed flat net optical gain coefficient in almost full visible region. In addition, the fluorescent temperature quenching of the glass was examined, and it was seen that about 50% of room temperature emission intensity was kept when the sample was heated up to 325°C.

    Description: The effects of doping on the electronic and magnetic properties of the quaternary Heusler alloy TiZrCoIn were investigated by first-principles calculations. Results showed that the appearance of half-metallicity and negative formation energies are associated in all of the TiZrCoIn1−xGex compounds, indicating that Ge doping at Z-site increases the stability without damaging the half-metallicity of the compounds. Formation energy gradually decreased with doping concentration, and the width of the spin-down gap increased with a change in Fermi level. TiZrCoIn0.25Ge0.75 was found to be the most stable half-metal. Its Fermi level was in the middle of the broadened gap, and a peak at the Fermi level was detected in the spin majority channel of the compound. The large gaps of the compounds were primarily dominated by the intense d-d hybridization between Ti, Zr, and Co. The substitution of In by Ge increased the number of sp valence electrons in the system and thereby enhanced RKKY exchange interaction and increased splitting. Moreover, the total spin magnetic moments of the doped compounds followed the Slater–Pauling rule of Mt = Zt − 18 and increased from 2 μB to 3 μB linearly with concentration.

    Description: We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk and monolayer CrSi2 using first-principle methods based on spin-polarized density functional theory. The phonon dispersion, electronic structures, and magnetism of bulk and monolayer CrSi2 were scientifically studied. Calculated phonon dispersion curves indicated that both bulk and monolayer CrSi2 were structurally stable. Our calculations revealed that bulk CrSi2 was an indirect gap nonmagnetic semiconductor, with 0.376 eV band gap. However, monolayer CrSi2 had metallic and ferromagnetic (FM) characters. Both surface and confinement effects played an important role in the metallic behavior of monolayer CrSi2. In addition, we also calculated the magnetic moment of unit cell of 2D multilayer CrSi2 nanosheets with different layers. The results showed that magnetism of CrSi2 nanosheets was attributed to band energy between layers, quantum size, and surface effects.
