Notes: The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well structures grown by two different liquid phase epitaxy methods are studied. It is found that the supersaturation of the melt used to grow the top AlGaAs barrier can significantly influence the abruptness of the AlGaAs/GaAs interface. The sample of two-phase method which melt has less supersaturation shows larger PL linewidth and a special high energy shoulder. When temperature increases, the special high energy shoulder gradually shrinks. On the other hand, the sample of large supersaturation has narrower PL linewidth and does not have high energy shoulder. Local quantized states due to the serious interface fluctuaction are used to explain the PL characteristics of the sample grown by the two-phase method.

Notes: Semiconductor manufacturing is in the spotlight of the global manufacturing industries. Quality management is strategically and tactically important for gaining a competitive advantage. Since Taiwan's semiconductor industry is one of the major suppliers of global semiconductor products, its quality management practice has a global impact. This research was conducted based on a proven measurement instrument for quality management practices including eight critical factors and 63 measuring items. Data were analyzed with respect to their reliability, mean rank, consistency, and correlation. Analysis results revealed insights into managers' perception of quality management practices in the semiconductor industries.

Notes: Total quality management (TQM) has been widely brought into action to improve the business's essence in industries. In Taiwan, the computer and its peripheral industry is becoming a real global business. Most of the companies are buying and selling goods and services all through the world's business community. The current progress toward TQM is one of the most noteworthy changes in Taiwan's computer and its peripheral industry. Uses questionnaires to survey the implementation issues of TQM in the computer and its peripheral industry in Taiwan. A total of 40 companies responded to the questionnaires in the survey. Observing the survey results, the quality performances of most Taiwan's computer and its peripheral companies are still vulnerable. Meanwhile, the training programs of related quality management techniques need further conduct to improve the quality management system.

Notes: The paper offers an intelligent approach to analyze and determine the design parameters minimizing the total cost and achieving the desired performance measures in the maintenance float systems. The expected total cost in a maintenance float system includes the cost of lost production, the cost of repair persons and the cost of standby machines. The developed design procedure integrates simulation, metamodel and genetic algorithms. Neural networks are able to approximate functions based on a set of sample data, i.e. construct metamodels from simulation results in this study. The objective of metamodels is to predict simulation responses in order to significantly reduce the amount of simulation runs. The predictive performance of neural metamodels comparably outperforms the traditional regression metamodels. The neural metamodels are further extended to formulate a decision model for optimizing the maintenance float systems by using genetic algorithms.

Notes: Summary As a continuation of the study by Herbst and Pitt (1991), this note presents two criteria. The first one is on the order-preservation for two (may be different) multidimensional diffusion processes. The second one is on the preservation of positive correlations for a diffusion process.

Notes: Abstract The Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine is one of the most effective production facilities used in manufacturing industry. Determining the optimal machining parameters is essential in the machining process planning since the machining parameters significantly affect production cost and quality of machined parts. Previous studies involving machining optimization of turning operations concentrated primarily on developing machining models for bar components. Machined parts on the CNC lathes, however, typically have continuous forms. In this study, we formulate an optimization model for turned parts with continuous forms. Also, a stochastic optimization method based on the simulated annealing algorithm and the pattern search is applied to solve this machining optimization problem. Finally, the applications of the developed machining model and the proposed optimization algorithm are established through the numerical examples.

Notes: Abstract New sufficient conditions are given for the ergodicity of reaction-diffusion processes which improve both Neuhauser's recent result and the present author's previous result. In the main criterion; contrary to the previous ones, the pure birth rate of the reaction plays a critical role. To do this, a new but natural coupling is introduced. It is proved that this coupling is the best one in some sense. One of the main results says that the reaction-diffusion processes are ergodic for all large enough pure birth rates.

Notes: A series of novel phosphonodipeptides has been synthesized from diphenyl α-aminoalkylphosphonates and N-chloroacetyl-N-alkyl (or aryl)glycine ethyl esters. The structures of all the compounds prepared were proved by 1H NMR, IR, MS, and elemental analyses. The bioassay tests showed that some of the compound have good herbicidal activity.
