Notes: Magnetic relaxation measurements have been made on two sets of samples of Y1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ high Tc superconductors with 0≤x≤0.10. The samples were prepared as fibers using a sol-gel process and as polycrystalline pellets using a standard solid-state reaction technique. In an applied field of 5 kOe at 30 K, the fluxoid pinning potential U was observed to increase approximately linearly with Pr concentration x at the rate dU/dx≈1 eV. A mechanism for the enhancement of U may be the suppression of the superconducting order parameter in the vicinity of the Pr ions due to magnetic pair breaking.

Notes: Among Sparus sarba, Acanthopagrus latus, A. schlegeli and Pagrus major, P. major had the largest egg size, with the biggest micropyle funnel and the most numerous accessory openings. The reinforcement in the micropyle canals was species specific with eight spiral clockwise, five two-spiral clockwise, seven two-spiral clockwise, and 10 triangular ridges in S. sarba, A. latus, A. schlegeli, and P. major, respectively. A key to identify these four species based on micropyle characters is proposed for future applications. Cladistic analysis by using different parsimonious methods on the morphological character of the micropyle suggested that the generic interrelationship between Sparus and Acanthopagrus was closer than to the genus Pagrus. Furthermore, the congeneric species of A. latus and A. schlegeli were the most closely related, with S. sarba the second, and P. major the last. This result agreed with conclusions obtained from other character suites including morphological, biochemical and molecular data.

Notes: A bacterium identified as Proteus mirabilis was isolated from acclimated sludge from a dyeing wastewater treatment plant. This strain rapidly decolorized a deep red azo dye solution (RED RBN). Features of the decolorizing process related to biodegradation and biosorption were also studied. Although P. mirabilis displayed good growth in shake culture, color removal was best in anoxic static cultures. For color removal, the optimal pH and temperature were 6.5–7.5 and 30–35°C, respectively. The organism exhibited a remarkable color removal capability, even at a high concentration of azo dye. More than 95% of azo dye was reduced within 20 h at a dye concentration of 1.0 g L−1. Decolorization appears to proceed primarily by enzymatic reduction associated with a minor portion, 13–17%, of biosorption to inactivated microbial cells.

Notes: The use of an immobilized-cell reactor for simultaneous carbon–nitrogen removal in wastewater with the monitoring of oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) in an intermittent aeration (IA) process was investigated. Under alternating aerated and nonaerated conditions, the ORP-time profile showed distinctive turning points that directly correlated with changes in the system chemistry and biological activity. The aeration ratio, defined as aeration time/cycle time, was optimum at 50% for obtaining the maximum efficiency of denitrification accompanied by sufficient nitrification. High simultaneous carbon–nitrogen removal efficiency could be achieved using the immobilized-cell reactor by applying the IA process. More than 90% of COD-removal efficiency and over 80% of total-nitrogen-removal efficiency were obtained using three aerobic–anoxic cycles per day at an aeration ratio of 50% and with a hydraulic retention time of 10 h. Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present study is to develop a phenomenological theory for elastic superconductors that is based on a rigorous thermodynamical internal variable theory in which the concept of complex internal variable is introduced to include the phase effect of quantum mechanics. Two phenomena of superconductivity, i.e., perfect conductivity and perfect diamagnetism, can be explained in the formulation. In the equilibrium state, this theory can be reduced to the well-known Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Upon linearizing the field equations, boundary conditions and constitutive equations, the governing equations of the rigid-body state and the perturbed state are obtained. These equations then serve to analyze the effect of the hydrostatic deformation on the penetration depth, the GL coherence length and the critical field.

Notes: Abstract Cytochrome c: cytochrome c peroxidase (Cc: CcP in 1: 1 ratio) complex was successfully encapsulated in sol-gel derived glass. The electron paramagnetic resonance (e.p.r.) and optical absorption techniques were used to characterize the coordination number, spin state, charge-transfer activity and structural orientation of Cc: CcP complex and its constituents. The sol-gel encapsulation of metalloproteins allows, for the first time, the detection of e.p.r. signals of biological systems at room temperature. CcP exhibits an e.p.r. spectrum representing the high spin and purely axial symmetry with parameters at g ⊥ ≅ 6 and g ∥ ≅ 2 and an electronic absorption spectrum with a descent in spectral intensity of shoulder band at 380 nm and a blue-shifted charge-transfer band at 620 nm. Cc shows an e.p.r. spectrum characterizing a mixture of high spin (g ⊥ ≅ 6 and g ∥ ≅ 2) and low spin (g x=2.7, g y=2.2 and g z=1.8) components. Upon complexation, Cc:CcP pair displays a single and broad e.p.r. spectrum at g ∥ ≅ 2 and a light absorption spectrum with a red-shifted Soret band at 423 nm, a blue-shifted charge-transfer band at 620 nm and an intensified charge-transfer band at 507 nm. These results suggest that the sol-gel encapsulated Cc:CcP complex has the following chemical and physical characteristics: (a) a hexa-coordination, (b) a high-spin state, (c) an active charge-transfer (or redox) pair, and (d) the direction of the g ∥ paramagnetic center of Cc : CcP complex lies nearly parallel to that of the heme normal. The structural coordinations of the sol-gel encapsulated Cc, CcP and Cc : CcP are examined. Moreover, the possible use of biogels at the sol, gelation, and xerogel stages during gel processing to control the structural rigidity and spatial separation/orientation of the encapsulated heme proteins and to study their possible routes of long-range electron transfer reactions are also discussed.
