Notes: Miniature and sub-miniature samples were used for determination of mechanical properties of materials for advanced fission plants. Results from indentation and focused ion beam prepared micro-samples, punch tests and thin strip (irradiation) creep tests are shown. The results allow conclusions concerning materials damage. Irradiation damage profiles were determined with indentation. Results from micro-pillar tests showed a good agreement with results from conventional samples in case of oxide dispersion strengthened steels. Thin strip irradiation creep experiments revealed a negligible influence of dispersoid size/distribution on creep rates. Punch tests of fibre reinforced materials showed consistent results which still need quantitative analysis

Notes: The commercial material PM2000 is investigated as a representative for the material classof Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels. ODS steels are envisaged as substance of structuralcomponents in Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTR). The VHTR concept is considered by theGeneration IV International Forum, an initiative researching the next generation of nuclear powerplants. The chosen ODS is mainly used for non-nuclear applications. In order to justify theapplicability of this material within a neutron irradiative environment, the evolution of radiationdamage must be investigated. PM2000 samples are therefore exposed to 4He2+ irradiation at differenttemperatures. The potential structural change is measured as a function of the radiation parameters, using Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy on the yttrium K-edge andon the iron K-edge. A degradation of the dispersoids or the steel matrix would show the limitation ofthis material candidate
