    Description: An optical neural network based upon the Neocognitron paradigm (K. Fukushima et al. 1983) is introduced. A novel aspect of the architectural design is shift-invariant multichannel Fourier optical correlation within each processing layer. Multilayer processing is achieved by iteratively feeding back the output of the feature correlator to the input spatial light modulator and updating the Fourier filters. By training the neural net with characteristic features extracted from the target images, successful pattern recognition with intra-class fault tolerance and inter-class discrimination is achieved. A detailed system description is provided. Experimental demonstration of a two-layer neural network for space objects discrimination is also presented.

    Description: We demonstrate a new optical correlator in which the correlation peak intensity is increased when the matched input object is moving. The basic configuration of the correlator is the same as a VanderLugt optical correlator consisting of a photorefractive crystal. The principal of this new correlator is based on the dynamic grating erasure property of photorefractive materials. The detail of this principle is described.

    Description: An innovative optically implemented morphological processor is introduced. With the use of a large space-bandwidth-product Dammann grating and a high-speed shutter spatial light modulator, effective structuring element with large size and arbitrary shape can be constructed with dynamic reconfigurability. This reconfigurability is a major improvement over the conventional correlator-based morphological processor in which fixed holographic filters are used as structuring elements (Casasent and Botha, 1988). A novel two-dimensional thresholding photodetector array, capable of performing parallel thresholding and feedback, is utilized in this system and makes possible the implementation of many complex morphological operations requiring iterative feedbacks and full programmability. The optical architecture and the principle of operation are presented. Experimental demonstration of binary image morphological erosion, dilation, opening, and closing are also demonstrated. A technique for extending this technique to gray-scale image using thresholding decomposition technique is also discussed.

    Description: A real-time broadband pseudocolor image enhancement technique using a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator (LCTV SLM) is described. Three different schemes to modulate the gray-scale disribution of an input scene by an LCTV SLM through varying the orientations of its analyzer are presented. These schemes are incorporated into a compact white light optical projection system that is able to display, on a large screen, broadband pseudocolor images of real-world input scenes. Experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of the technique are reported.

    Description: A coherent optical correlation technique for real-time simultaneous tracking of several different objects making independent movements is described, and experimental results are presented. An evaluation of this system compared with digital computing systems is made. The real-time processing capability is obtained through the use of a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator and a dichromated gelatin multifocus hololens. A coded reference beam is utilized in the separation of the output correlation plane associated with each input target so that independent tracking can be achieved.

    Description: The discovery of an edge enhancement effect in using a Hughes CdS liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) is reported. An edge-enhanced version of the input writing image can be directly obtained by operating the LCLV at a lower bias frequency and bias voltage. Experimental conditions in which this edge enhancement effect can be optimized are described. Experimental results show that the SNR of the readout image using this technique is superior to that obtained using high-pass filtering. The repeatability of this effect is confirmed by obtaining an edge enhancement result using two different Hughes LCLVs. The applicability of this effect to improve discrimination capability in optical pattern recognition is addressed. The results show that the Hughes LCLV can be used in both continuous tone and edge-enhancing modes by simply adjusting its bias conditions.

    Description: Real- and nonreal-time optical image subtraction (OIS) techniques are reviewed. Real-time OIS techniques include source encoding, polarization modulation, pseudocolor image difference detection, the holographic shear lens technique, and nonlinear optics. Included in the nonreal-time category are speckle diffuser encoding, speckle-pattern encoding, halftone screen encoding, and polarization-shifted encoding. It is concluded that the most useful techniques are the real-time operations. It is noted that some nonreal-time optical techniques can be applied directly while others may be converted into real-time ones through the use of advance real-time spatial light modulators or electrooptic devices.

    Description: The on-going development of an automatic target recognition and tracking system at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is presented. This system is an optical pattern recognition neural network (OPRNN) that is an integration of an innovative optical parallel processor and a feature extraction based neural net training algorithm. The parallel optical processor provides high speed and vast parallelism as well as full shift invariance. The neural network algorithm enables simultaneous discrimination of multiple noisy targets in spite of their scales, rotations, perspectives, and various deformations. This fully developed OPRNN system can be effectively utilized for the automated spacecraft recognition and tracking that will lead to success in the Automated Rendezvous and Capture (AR&C) of the unmanned Cargo Transfer Vehicle (CTV). One of the most powerful optical parallel processors for automatic target recognition is the multichannel correlator. With the inherent advantages of parallel processing capability and shift invariance, multiple objects can be simultaneously recognized and tracked using this multichannel correlator. This target tracking capability can be greatly enhanced by utilizing a powerful feature extraction based neural network training algorithm such as the neocognitron. The OPRNN, currently under investigation at JPL, is constructed with an optical multichannel correlator where holographic filters have been prepared using the neocognitron training algorithm. The computation speed of the neocognitron-type OPRNN is up to 10(exp 14) analog connections/sec that enabling the OPRNN to outperform its state-of-the-art electronics counterpart by at least two orders of magnitude.
