Notes: Risk-based inspection (RBI) guideline based on API 581 provides a methodology for calculating the risks of equipment in refinery or petrochemical plant. However, there is a major limitation of its application to the petrochemical plant directly since only a representative material is considered in calculating the risk, especially in part of the consequence of failure, even though the equipment is composed of numerous materials. The objectives of this paper are to develop an enhanced RBI program to resolve shortcoming inclusive of the above issue and to evaluate the risks ofequipment in petrochemical plant using the program. In this respect, the mole fractions of materials were used to fully incorporate the characteristics of different materials. The proposed RBI program consists of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk evaluation modules in which toxic materials as well as representative materials were selected automatically for comparison with those inthe current guideline. The RBI program has been applied to evaluate the risks of equipment in Naphtha Cracking Center (NCC) which is a typical facility of petrochemical plant. Thereby, promising evaluation results were obtained and applicability of the proposed RBI program was proven

Notes: In this paper, conservatisms of current plugging criteria on steam generator tubes arereviewed and six new failure prediction models for dual through-wall cracks are proposed. In order todetermine the optimum ones among these local or global failure prediction models, a series of plasticcollapse tests and corresponding finite element analyses are carried out with respect to two adjacentaxial through-wall cracks in thin plates. Then, reaction force model, plastic zone contact model andCOD (Crack Opening Displacement) base model were selected as the optimum ones for integrityassessment of steam generator tubes with dual cracks

Notes: Steam generators working in nuclear power plants convert water into steam from heatproduced in the reactor core and each of them contains from 3,000 to 16,000 tubes. Since these tubesconstitute one of primary barriers under radioactive and high pressure condition, the integrity shouldbe maintained carefully during the operation. The objective of this research is to introduce anintegrity evaluation system for steam generator tubes as a substitute of well-trained engineers orexperts. For this purpose, a couplet examination has been carried out on the complicated evaluationprocedure and an efficient system named as STiES was developed employing three representativeintegrity evaluation methods: fracture mechanics analysis (crack driving force diagram andJ-integral/Tearing modulus method) and limit load method. Exemplary analyses for steam generatortubes with various types of flaws showed good applicability of the proposed integrity evaluationsystem. So, it is anticipated that the system can be used for the calculation of reference pressure todecide either the continued operation or repair until next outage

Notes: While the demand on electric power is consistently increasing, public concerns andregulations for the construction of new nuclear power plants are getting restrict, and also operatingnuclear power plants are gradually ageing. For this reason, the interest on lifetime extension foroperating nuclear power plants by applying lifetime management system is increasing. The 40-yeardesign life concept was originally introduced on the basis of economic and safety considerations. Inother words, it was not determined by technological evaluations. Also, the transient design datawhich were applied for fatigue damage evaluation were overly conservative in comparison withactual transient data. Therefore, the accumulation of fatigue damage may result in a big differencebetween the actual data and the design data. The lifetime of nuclear power plants is mostly dependenton the fatigue life of a reactor pressure vessel, and thus, the exact evaluation of fatigue life on areactor pressure vessel is a crucial factor in determining the extension of operating life. The purposeof this paper is to introduce a real-time fatigue monitoring system for an operating reactor pressurevessel which can be used for the lifetime extension. In order to satisfy the objectives, a web-basedtransient acquisition system was developed, thereby, real-time thermal-hydraulic data were reservedfor 18 operating reactor pressure vessels. A series of finite element analyses was carried out to obtainthe stress data due to actual transient. The fatigue life evaluation has been performed based on thestress analysis results and, finally, a web-based fatigue life evaluation system was introduced bycombining analysis results and on-line monitoring system. Comparison of the stress analysis resultsbetween operating transients and design transients showed a considerable amount of benefits in termsof fatigue life. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed web-based system can be utilized as anefficient tool for fatigue life estimation of reactor pressure vessel

Notes: The present work deals with an applicability of the local approach to assess in-plane sizeeffects among different sized compact tension (CT) specimens. To characterize ductile crack growthof typical nuclear materials, SA515 Gr.60 and SA516 Gr.70 carbon steels, finite element analysesemploying modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests were carried out.Material damage parameters were calibrated using standard CT specimens and reflected to predictfracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Since comparison results betweennumerically estimated J-R curves and experimentally determined ones corresponded well, it isanticipated that the local approach might be used as a promising tool for ductile fracture evaluationincorporating the in-plane size effect

Notes: Goal setting safety legislation for high pressure systems was first introduced in 1973 andretained in the High Pressure Safety Management Law in Korea. This has enabled a move towardsinspection strategies based on the risk of failure. This trend towards a risk based approach is beingsupported by extensive plant operating experience, improved understanding of material degradationmechanisms, and the availability of fitness-for-service assessment procedures. RBI (Risk-BasedInspection) is very effective and efficient of the inspection and maintenance techniques. In particular,RBI will be found how to apply both inspection interval as a result of RBI implementation andre-inspection interval of pressurized equipment defined by the High Pressure Safety ManagementLaw in Korea. The objectives of this paper are to develop an enhanced KGS-RBITM program toresolve shortcoming inclusive of the above issue and to evaluate the risks of equipments in NaphthaCracking Center (NCC) which is a typical facility of petrochemical plant using the KGS-RBITMprogram. The results of the risk assessment and re-inspection interval of internal opening usingKGS-RBITM program are useful in determining the inspection planning

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to investigate principles of levitation and restitution of blowingnozzle prior to fabricating a prototype of air handling system. Since air force distributions streamingbottom surface of a flat panel display (FPD) highly dependent on operating as well as design conditionand configuration of air handling system, influences of various parameters such as flow rate, supplyair pressure, floating height and tilted angle are examined through a series of computational fluiddynamics (CFD) analyses. Moreover, dynamic finite element analyses of the FPD are carried out toassure that an oscillation effect caused by disturbances is not significant. Key findings from the bothCFD and structural analysis results are presented and discussed, which can be utilized as technicalbases for development of the practical air handling system

Notes: Steam generator in a nuclear power plant is huge heat exchanger that transfers heat fromreactor to make steam to drive turbine-generator. Failure of the steam generator tubes can result in therelease of fission products to the secondary side. Therefore, accurate integrity assessment of thecracked steam generator tubes is of great importance for maintaining the safety of the nuclear powerplant. This paper provides limit loads for circumferential through-wall cracks in steam generatortubes under combined internal pressure and bending loads. Such limit loads are developed on thebasis of three dimensional finite element analyses assuming elastic-perfectly plastic materialbehavior. As for the crack location, both the top of the tubesheet and U-bend regions are considered. The analysis results can be directly applied to the practical integrity assessment of cracked steamgenerator tubes, because the comparison between experimental data and FE results shows a very goodagreement

Notes: In the ASME Code Section III ‘design by analysis’ approach, stresses are determined bynumerical method and compared with corresponding stress limits. This approach provides severalstress criteria for fatigue life assessment and procedures for categorizing the representative stresscomponents. Since the stress criteria were derived from two-dimensional basis, however, it mayinappropriate to delineate structural components with complex geometry. In this paper, detailedtransient analyses are performed for modular pressurizer with an asymmetric geometry, whichincludes perforated parts to mount various piping and equipments. Also, the applicability of aneffective elastic modulus to consider the perforation and the appropriateness of stress linearizationmethod using stress classification line are assessed. Then, the cumulative usage factor as well as stressintensities at critical locations of the pressurizer are calculated and compared with correspondingallowable design stress limits. The key findings of this work can be used to make regulatory guides forevaluation and confirmation of structural intensity of components with asymmetric perforated parts
