Description: This dataset contains ice phenology for 56 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere from 1979 to 2019. The ice phenology was extracted from 3.125 km 37 GHz H-polarized evening brightness temperature data from Scanning Multi-channel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), Special Sensor Microwave Image (SSM/I) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data in the Calibrated Enhanced Resolution Brightness Temperature (CETB) dataset. According to the differences in the brightness temperature between lake ice and open water, a threshold algorithm based on Moving t test method was applied to determine the lake ice status for the pixels 6.25 km away from the lake shore, and the ice phenology dates for each lake were then extracted. For the overlapping lake ice phenology results extracted from multiple satellite, the results from the satellite with the highest utilization were prioritized. The lake ice phenology dataset provides valuable information about the changes in the lakes with seasonal ice cover in the past four decades.

Description: Fossil pollen and spore records provide highly creditable proxy data to investigate the past environmental changes such as palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate. Pollen database promotes past environmental studies from local to regional and global scales and from qualitative to quantitative reconstructions. This is of great significance on exploring the interactions among past vegetation, climates and anthropogenic disturbances at large spatial scale and long temporal scale, to better understand the evolution of the earth system. In this paper, a fossil pollen dataset of China is compiled, by synthesizing 372 original or digitized fossil pollen records including 790 pollen taxa in China’s land and ocean during the late-Quaternary (since 50 ka BP). The dataset includes site names, latitude, longitude and altitude, pollen data source, sample type, sediment length or span, sample number of each site, dating method and dating number, age span and reference, as well as the fossil pollen percentage of each sampling site. The pollen data, mostly published from late 1980s to present, are concentrated in vegetation regions of temperate and subtropical forests, temperate grasslands, temperate deserts and alpine vegetation on the Qingzang Plateau. Sample sites are distributed at different altitudes from deep sea to high Qingzang Plateau, but the majority of the sites are located between 0–2 000 m. The dataset comprises of 178 raw pollen records (47.8%) and 194 digitized pollen records (52.2%). Pollen samples are mainly from lake sediment (151 sites), alluvial/fluvial sediment (99 sites), and peat (67 sites), accounting for 85.2% of the total sampling sites. Radiocarbon is the main dating method that accounts for 93.8% of total samples, and most of the sites have 2–10 radiocarbon dating data. Each site has an average number of pollen taxa of 19, with the most sites having 4–30 pollen taxa. The temporal and spatial distribution of representative pollen taxa (Pinus, Quercus, Artemisia and Poaceae) reveals increasing trends both in their distributional range and pollen concentration from the last glacial maximum to Holocene, but such trends have various regional patterns in different parts of China. This fossil pollen dataset is a fruitful work of collection of pollen records in most territory of China that conducted by palynologists from China and overseas during the last half century. It consolidates the valuable and fundamental data that can be potentially utilized to explore the evolution of past environments and their driving mechanism of climate change and human disturbance.

Notes: A theoretical description is given of the exchange interaction between two Cu2+ ions in φ4AsCuCl3 crystals. The crystal field theory is used to investigate the single Cu2+ ion in the crystal, which is the basis of the further consideration of Cu2+-Cu2+ pairs exchange interaction Js1s2. The theoretical expressions of the transition energy levels, magnetic susceptibility, g factors, and zero-field splitting have been obtained. The calculation results agree with the experiment. The agreement between the calculation result of D(−0.116 cm−1), E(0.041 cm−1), and that of experiment D(−0.11 cm−1) E(0.009 cm−1) in φ4AsCuCl3 implies that the zero-field splitting is mainly due to the exchange interaction, the crystal field, and the spin-orbit coupling. Since the J value here is not large, the Cu2+-Cu2+ pairwise coupling contributes little to the electronic splitting and g factors, which is just the experimental results. In the calculation of pairs contribution, no adjustable parameters are introduced. So it is possible to obtain the EPR parameters as long as we know the crystal structure.

Notes: The Fe nitride films were easily produced by facing targets sputtering (FTS). The structures and magnetic properties of the films depend on the reactive pressure (PN) and dc substrate biasing voltage (Vb). α-Fe, α‘-Fe16N2, γ'-Fe4N, ε-Fe3N, and ζ-Fe2N as well as the amorphous FeN phase have been produced at the PN ranges of 0–8×10−3 Torr. The magnetic moment per iron atom increases with PN until PN=1.0 mTorr at which the α'-Fe16N2 phase appears with the coercive force Hc=103 A/m, susceptibility χm=161, and μS=2.85 μB. The relation between conductivity and temperature σ-T indicates that Fe nitride films resemble a semiconductor. The Curie temperature of these films is reduced with the increase of PN. Magnetic relaxation phenomena were observed in the vicinity of 540 °C.

Notes: We report on an approach of using AlN/AlGaN superlattices (SLs) for threading-dislocation-density reduction to grow high quality thick AlGaN on sapphire. Using x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and etch pits counting by atomic force microscopy, we show that the insertion of AlN/AlGaN SLs suppresses the material mosaicity and decreases the threading dislocation density by two orders of magnitude, and then eliminates cracking. Dislocation densities deduced from the XRD results and those from chemical etching are in a good agreement. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fruit development is a process involving various signals and gene expression. Protein phosphorylation catalysed by protein kinases is known to play a key role in eukaryotic cell signalling and so may be involved in the regulation of fruit development. Using the method of exogenous substrate phosphorylation, the activity of calcium-dependent and calmodulin-independent protein kinase (CDPK) that was stimulated by phosphatidylserine, and the myelin basic protein (MBP)-phosphorylating activity that could be due to a calcium-independent mitogen-activated protein kinase-like (MAPK-like) activity in the developing apple fruits were identified. The CDPK activity was shown to be predominantly localized in the plasma membrane, whereas in the presence of phosphatidylserine, the high activity of CDPK was detected in both plasma membrane and endomembranes. The MAPK-like activity was predominantly associated with endomembranes. The assays of bivalent cation requirement showed that Mn2+ could replace Mg2+ in the incubation system for the protein kinase activities and stimulate CDPK activity more than Mg2+. Heat treatment abolished CDPK but stimulated MAPK-like activity. The activities of the phosphatidylserine-stimulated CDPK and of the MAPK-like were fruit developmental stage-specific with higher activities of both enzymes in the early and middle developmental stages in comparison with the late developmental stage. These data suggest that the detected protein kinases may play an important role in the fruit development.
