Notes: Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana and Chamaecyparis formosensis are congener gymnosperm tree species native to Taiwan cloud forests; occupying different niches there. While the seedlings of C. formosensis occur predominantly under bright conditions in large forest gaps, seedlings of C. obtusa var. formosana are mainly found below the canopy of mature forests or in small gaps. It is well known that congener species occupying different niches typically differ in several ecophysiological and morphological traits, but the differences in growth dynamics of such species are still totally unclear, as the diurnal growth dynamics of gymnosperm leaves have not been investigated before. Modern methods of digital image sequence processing were used in this study to analyse the leaf growth dynamics of the two species. We found that both species show similar base–tip gradients and pronounced diurnal growth rhythms with maxima in the evening. Differences between the two species concerning their growth dynamics correlated closely with their ecological amplitudes and abundances. Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana grew faster than C. formosensis in low light intensity, typical for closed-canopy situations, and reacted quickly by increasing or decreasing growth rate when light intensity changed within a range typically found below small canopy gaps. In contrast to this, C. formosensis grew better in light intensities typical for open vegetation situations, but reacted slower towards changes of light intensity. Based on those results, the hypothesis can be developed that fluctuations of leaf growth dynamics reflect heterogeneities of the light environment within the niche occupied by a given species.

Notes: Abstract. With rapid urbanisation, the demand for office floor space also increases. Although high-rise buildings are very common in urban areas, study of the rent for different stories in such buildings is relatively rare. Liu (1988) and Grimaud (1989) separately applied agglomeration economies to study the density variation in urban areas. However, these studies assumed that the floor rent in the same building is the same for each story. Such an assumption about floor rent may not fully reflect actual floor rent and, from the perspectives of theoretical completeness and practical usefulness, formulation for different floor rents in high-rise buildings, and their effect on urban density variation should also be considered. This research note extends Ogawa and Fujita's locational potential function (1980) into two dimensions: flat dimension and story dimension. The modification of the locational potential function is then applied to revise Liu's model. Finally, the office distribution in a CBD (central business district) is then discussed.

Notes: Using the theory of wave propagation in a finely layered medium which grew out of the work of O'Doherty and Anstey we calculate synthetic VSP traces and the slant stack of the transmitted waves. The present work may be regarded as an application of the method described by Burridge, White & Papanicolaou (1988), Burridge & Chang (1989), and De Hoop, Burridge & Chang (1990).The anisotropy (transverse isotropy) due to the fine layering is apparent in the pulse arrival times and the shear wave splitting. It can be shown that the arrival times agree with the effective medium theory of Schoenberg & Muir (1989). However, that effective medium theory does not predict the observed pulse broadening. Our results can be obtained by combining ray theoretic amplitudes in the average medium with a changing pulse shape evolving according to a certain integro-differential equation governed by the medium statistics.

Notes: Anionic polysaccharides (Na-alginate, Na-carboxyl-methyl-cellulose, high methoxy pectin and κ-carrageenan) were evaluated for their suitability towards simple and more efficient separation of lysozyme from salted or fresh duck eggs and hen egg whites for use in foods. Only κ-carrageenan interacted and formed precipitates with lysozyme. Recovery of lysozyme from fivefold diluted salted duck egg whites was 60–65% and 78–81% from fresh duck and hen egg whites using 0.7%κ-carrageenan. The recovered lysozyme from the salted duck egg whites was stable during storage at 4°C for 35 days.

Notes: Chicken frankfurters fat content was decreased by using various levels of oat bran and added water and evaluated for quality. Frankfurters with higher levels of oat bran had less expressible moisture and required higher shear stress to break. There were no difference in springiness among frankfurters made with different levels of oat bran; however, those with higher oat bran were rated less juicy and more grainy by taste panelists. The addition of water increased intensities of strain, springiness and juiciness, but decreased shear stress and hardness values. Contour plots showed optimum formulation at 〈2% oat bran 20% of added water.

Notes: The relationships between free ABA levels and shoot elongation were investigated in shoots of Scirpus mucronatus L. Under submergence, shoot elongation increased but free ABA levels decreased. The extent of the increase in length and the decrease in free ABA in submerged shoots increased with the increase of water depth. When the shoots were transferred to air after 12 days of submergence, they ceased to elongate and the free ABA levels recovered to the values of air-grown shoots. ABA, at concentrations from 1 μM to 1 mM, inhibited the submergence-induced shoot elongation. In ambient air, fluridone, an inhibitor of ABA biosynthesis, at 7 μM decreased the free ABA levels in shoots but increased shoot elongation. The effects could be reversed by 10 μM ABA. These results indicate that ABA is an internal inhibitor of shoot growth in Scirpus.

Notes: Changes in polyamine biosynthesis in relation to submergence-enhanced shoot elongation were determined in shoots of Scirpus mucronatus L. Under submergence, the levels of free putrescine and the activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC, EC 4.1.1.19) and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC, EC 4.1.1.17) increased, but the levels of free spermidine and spermine and the activity of S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC, EC 4.1.1.50) decreased. The increases in free putrescine and shoot elongation in submerged shoots diminished from the base to the apex. The increase in free putrescine in submerged shoots was coincident with the increase in shoot length. The submergence-induced increases in free putrescine and shoot elongation were inhibited by both 5 μMa-difluoromethylarginine and 5 μMa-difluoromethylornithine, and the inhibitory effects were reversed by 50 μM putrescine. These overall results indicate that ADC- and ODC-mediated putrescine synthesis is essential for the elongation of Scirpus shoots grown under submergence.

Notes: Abstract Wavelength-flattened optical fibre couplers can be designed by employing guided cores with different dimensions. We perform modelling of such couplers with weakly fused cross-sections based on accurate modal analysis and superposition of normal modes. Vectorial normal modes on asymmetrical weakly fused couplers involving touching fibres with different radii are solved by the circular harmonics expansion method; thus our model can treat the effects of different polarizations. The step approximation is adopted in modelling the tapered structure.
