Notes: Abstract Multiple sequence comparison refers to the search for similarity in three or more sequences. This article presents a survey of the exhaustive (optimal) and heuristic (possibly sub-optimal) methods developed for the comparison of multiple macromolecular sequences. Emphasis is given to the different approaches of the heuristic methods. Four distance measures derived from information engineering and genetic studies are introduced for the comparison between two alignments of sequences. The use ofentropy, which plays a central role in information theory as measures of information, choice and uncertainty, is proposed as a simple measure for the evaluation of the optimality of an alignment in the absence of anya priori knowledge about the structures of the sequences being compared. This article also gives two examples of comparison between alternative alignments of the same set of 5SRNAs as obtained by several different heuristic methods.

Notes: Abstract This article presents a new method for the comparison of multiple macromolecular sequences. It is based on a hierarchical sequence synthesis procedure that does not require anya priori knowledge of the molecular structure of the sequences or the phylogenetic relations among the sequences. It differs from the existing methods as it has the capability of: (i) generating a statistical-structural model of the sequences through a synthesis process that detects homologous groups of the sequences, and (ii) aligning the sequences while the taxonomic tree of the sequences is being constructed in one single phase. It produces superior results when compared with some existing methods.

Notes: In order to improve the control and information integration capability of an NC machining system, this paper provides a new concept – an NC feature unit (NCFU), which is a feature-based and a basic control unit. First, as a feature-based control unit, NCFU possesses geometric form and control parameters, which are a subclass of high-level CAD/CAM features so that it can be used as an information exchange medium between NC machining systems and other manufacturing execution systems. Secondly, as a basic machining control unit, NCFU uses a geometrically defined closed and non-gouging machined area. On the one hand, through decompo-sition, a machined object can be divided into a combination of several NCFUs. On the other hand, since NCFUs are non-gouging, the algorithm for NCFU-based tool-path generation is simple enough to be executable in real-time. This paper discusses NCFU-based applications in 2.-D profile/pocket and 3D surface mill machining, including the NCFU definition and the related algorithms for decomposition calculation and area interpolation. A next generation NC machining system based on NCFU, including an NCFU-based NCP and an NCFU-based CNC system, has been prototyped by China’s State 863/CIMS Design Automation Laboratory in Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. An NCFU is being used as the information exchange medium in an internet-integrated manufacturing system with NC machining at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports three on-going research projects in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the National University of Singapore. These three projects are (a) designing an expert system for computer performance monitoring, (b) machine translation projects involving three common languages in Singapore and (c) neural network systems providing an alternative to conventional computing to solve AI problems.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents the results of a long-term survey of the hydrography, nutrients and phytoplankton in Tolo Harbour carried out between 1982 and 1992. Some nutrients such as total inorganic nitrogen, ammonia and total phosphorus increased during the 10 year period, but chlorophyll a, which indicated algal biomass, did not show an increasing trend. The phytoplankton of Tolo Harbour consisted largely of diatoms. Dinoflagellates and minor algal groups such as cryptomonads and small flagellates constituted a smaller fraction of the phytoplankton population. Densities of diatoms and minor algal groups increased in some stations, but the density of dinoflagellates remained relatively unchanged during the study period. Most nutrient variables were negatively correlated with densities of diatom and total phytoplankton, and positively correlated with densities of minor algal groups. While dinoflagellate densities were positively correlated with total nitrogen in some stations, no correlation existed between dinoflagellate density and most of the nutrient variables. Our results show that there is a gradual change in phytoplankton community in Tolo Harbour, most notably in the nutrient-rich inner harbour waters, with the smaller algae assuming increasing abundance. Thus there was a net increase in density of total phytoplankton even though chlorophyll a concentrations did not increase. No evidence was found in this study to show that increased nutrient loading would inevitably lead to increase in densities of dinoflagellates in Tolo Harbour. Instead, dinoflagellate densities showed stronger correlations with physical variables such as temperature, pH and salinity.

Notes: Salts of the cis-[Coen2(n-CxH2x+1NH2)Cl]2+ cations where x = 4-12 have been prepared, and their visible and infrared spectra measured. Rate constants for their solvolysis have been determined over a range of temperatures and activation parameters calculated. These spectral and kinetic data are briefly discussed.

Notes: The replacement, by hydroxide ion, of the coordinated halide from some halogenopentamminecobalt(III) and -Chromium(III) cations in aqueous dioxan has been studied over a range of alkali concentrations up to 0.1 M. With excess of hydroxide ion at constant ionic strength, pseudo first-order rate constants were obtained. The results support a pre-equilibrium association of complex and hydroxide ions in these media, but do not provide distinction as to whether the resulting ion-pair subsequently reacts by direct exchange or by proton removal. The extents of ion association are found to be greater for the cobalt(III) than for the chromium(III) system, increasing with the amount of dioxin in the solvent mixture.
