    Notes: Summary Glucose phosphate isomerase (E.C. 5.3.1.9) and phosphoglucomutase (E.C. 2.7.5.1) were found to be polymorphic in a laboratory colony of Aedes albopictus. The glucose phosphate isomerase locus is represented by two alleles resulting in three genotypes, while the phosphoglucomutase locus is represented by at least five alleles giving rise to a total of 15 genotypes. The inheritance of these two enzymes is of the Mendelian type with codominant alleles. Present data indicate that these genes are not linked. Of 105 mosquitoes analysed for these two gene-enzyme systems, the frequencies for glucose phosphate isomerase alleles are Gpi S=0.68 and Gpi F=0.32, while the frequencies for phosphoglucomutase alleles are Pgm A=0.16, Pgm B=0.11, Pgm C=0.19, Pgm D=0.30 and Pgm F= 0.24. The frequencies of the three glucose phosphate isomerase genotypes are in accord with Hardy-Weinberg expectations (X 1 2 =2.74). Similarly, the frequencies of the 15 phosphoglucomutase genotypes probably do not differ significantly from Hardy-Weinberg expectations (X 10 2 = 18.45).

    Notes: Abstract A method is proposed to reduce the field anisotropy inN-body calculations arising from the discretization of Poisson's equation in a particle-mesh scheme. Specifically, the mass is split (in addition to that employed in the mass assignment algorithm) over neighbouring points to create compensating higher-order multipoles. Improvement by factor 2 has been observed in the field calculations, and spurious geometric effects in the example of a 4000 particle free-fall collapse have been reduced.

    Notes: Abstract The method of similarity analysis in the study of differential equations is extended to study the variability of parameters in a physical system. The analysis provides an insight into the meaning of “physical” similarity, which usually means the possibility of a reduction in the number of physical parameters characterizing the system. Theorems relating similarities to groups of invariant transformations are proved and employed to show how the number of parameters can be reduced.

    Notes: Abstract The genetics of glucosephosphate isomerase (E.C. 5.3.1.9) in two strains (Malaysian and Taiwan) of Aedes togoi is reported. Three electrophoretic phenotypes were present in both sexes. The zymogram patterns were identical in both strains of A. togoi. The phenotypes were governed by a pair of codominant alleles. The allele frequency of the slow-moving band was 0.63 in the Malaysian strain and was 0.86 and 0.82 in F161 and F169 generations, respectively, of the Taiwan strain. The sample studied was in good accord with Hardy-Weinberg expectations.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the concept of a quasi-axisymmetric circulation to explore the global scale dynamics of planetary atmospheres. The momentum and energy transport processes in the smaller scales are formulated in terms of anisotropic eddy diffusion. In the early work of Williams and Robinson (1973) these concepts have been introduced to describe the Jovian circulation. Our study differs in that we adopt a spectral model (with vector spherical harmonics) and consider a linear system; we are also examining a different parameter regime. The troposphere of Jupiter is assumed to be weakly convectively unstable, and the circulation is driven by the fundamental component of solar differential heating with a broad maximum at the equator. Mode coupling arising from the Coriolis action is considered in self consistent form, and momentum and energy are allowed to cascade from lower to higher order modes. With a limited number of spherical harmonics, up to order 40, and with homogeneous boundary conditions, the conservation equations are integrated between the 25 and 10−5 bar pressure levels. In addition, a simplified single layer model is discussed which, even though heuristic in nature, elucidates and complements the numerical results. Our analysis leads to the following conclusions: (a) For a negative stability, S 0 = ∂T 0/∂r + γ, the energy transports arising from large scale advection by the meridional circulation can amplify the response to the external heating. This crucially depends on the latitudinal structure of the circulation, so that banded wind fields with equatorial zonal jets are preferentially excited. (b) With a negative stability of order S 0 ~ − 10−6 K cm−1, the computed number of positive (and negative) zonal jets is similar to that observed on Jupiter. (c) The observed magnitudes in the zonal wind velocities require that the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient is of the order K r ~ 3 × 105 cm2 s−1, which in turn is consistent with the observed outward flux of energy from the planetary interior (F ∫ K r S 0 ); this diffusion rate is also of the right order of magnitude to obey mixing length theory. (d) The ratio between the horizontal and vertical eddy diffusion coefficients (relative mixing factor) is of critical importance. If it is too large (≫ 105), differential rotation or alternating zonal jets cannot be maintained; if it is too small (≪ 104), the equator tends to corotate. The intermediate value of order R ~ 5 × 104 is again consistent with mixing length theory. (e) With the above constraints on the transport coefficients, the flow is quasigeostrophic. (f) The meridional circulation is multicellular and of the Ferrel-Thomson type. It is consistent with the observed cloud striations in the Jovian atmosphere. (g) In the stable stratosphere at higher altitudes the fundamental component, directly driven by the Sun, dominates. The circulation degenerates, and broad, positive zonal jets develop at middle latitudes, resembling the observed wind field in the visible cloud cover of the Venus atmosphere.

    Notes: Abstract The Hadley mechanism is adopted to describe the axisymmetric four day superrotation in the Venus atmosphere, with solar driven meridional winds redistributing energy and momentum, and eddy diffusion describing the actions of three dimensional transient eddies. We address the question how the eddy diffusion coefficients are related to the properties of the circulation. For the atmosphere of a slowly rotating planet such as Venus, we show that a form of the non-linear closure is suggested by the mixing length hypothesis, which constrains the magnitude of the eddy diffusion coefficients. Combining this constraint with the concept of the Rossby radius of deformation yields zonal velocities on the order of 100 m sec−1. A steady state, non-linear, one-layer spectral model is used for a parametric study to find a relationship between heat source, meridional circulation and eddy diffusion coefficients, which yields the large zonal velocities observed. This analysis leads to the following conclusions: (1) Proportional changes in the heat source and eddy diffusion coefficients do not significantly change the zonal velocities. (2) The meridional velocity is virtually constant for large eddy diffusion coefficients. (3) Below a threshold in the diffusion rate, the meridional velocity decreases, commensurate with the mixing length hypothesis. Eddy heat conduction becomes important and shares with the Hadley cell advection in balancing the solar heating. The zonal velocities then reach large values near 100 m sec−1. (4) For large eddy diffusion and small heating rates, the zonal velocities decrease with decreasing planetary rotation rates. However, under condition (3), the zonal velocities are independent of the planetary rotation rate. Ramifications are discussed for related parameterizations in GCMs, emphasizing that eddy diffusion coefficients are governed by solar forcing and cannot be chosen independently.
