    Notes: The effect of iron and iron/yttrium codoping on the densification and grain growth of ultra high-purity (99.995%) fine-grained alumina has been studied. The experiments were carried out under both oxidizing (flowing air) and reducing conditions (N2/H2 mixture, pO2∼5.1 × 10−14). For studies carried out in air, relative to undoped alumina, the addition of 1000 ppm Fe was found to reduce the densification rate by a factor of 5 and also retard the grain growth rate. This result, which was consistent with tensile creep data obtained in a separate study, was attributed to the retardation of grain-boundary diffusive processes by segregating Fe(III) ions. In contrast, under reducing conditions the 1000 ppm Fe- doped samples exhibited an increase in the densification rate of 2.5 orders of magnitude over that of the undoped samples. In the case of the codoped compositions (1000 ppm Fe/1000 ppm Y), for heat treatment in air, the densification behavior did not differ significantly from that of samples singly doped with Y (1000 ppm). However, under reducing conditions, the presence of the Fe2+ in the samples appeared to compensate for the retarding effect of the yttrium, such that the densification rate of the codoped samples was comparable with that of the undoped material. A mechanism based on compensating point defects is invoked to rationalize the more rapid kinetics under reducing conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Traditional food resources of indigenous peoples are now recognized as containing a variety of environmental contaminants which reach food species through local or long-range transport avenues. In this chapter we review the published reports of contaminants contained in traditional food in northern North America and Europe as organochlorines, heavy metals, and radionuclides. Usually, multiple contaminants are contained in the same food species. Measurement of dietary exposure to these environmental contaminants is reviewed, as are major issues of risk assessment, evaluation, and management. The dilemma faced by indigenous peoples in weighing the multiple nutritional and socioeconomic benefits of traditional food use against risk of contaminants in culturally important food resources is described.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of microstructure on the crack resistance (R-curve) behaviour of a commercial debased alumina containing large amounts of glassy phase (28 vol%) has been studied by strength measurements at controlled flaw sizes produced by indentation. Both the individual and combined effects of (a) grain size, and (b) intergranular second phase (glassy or crystalline) were evaluated. Enhancement of theR-curve behaviour was observed when the average grain size was increased from 3–18 μm by thermal treatment. However, no effect of the degree of crystallinity of the intergranular second phase on theR-curve behaviour, in either small or large-grained materials, was observed. These results are discussed with reference to the influence of grain-boundary residual stresses on grain bridging across the crack interface.

    Notes: Abstract AIN with high thermal conductivity was fabricated by pressureless sintering with Y2O3 as the sintering aid. The thermal conductivity was observed to increase with sintering time (up to 8 h) at 1810 °C. The distribution of the sintering aid was identified as one of the major factors influencing the thermal conductivity in AIN. Non-uniform distribution of the grain boundary phase was found to be associated with a significant amount of porosity, resulting in the enhancement of phonon scattering and thereby lowering the thermal conductivity.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of processing conditions on the morphology of calcium hexaluminate (CA6) grains in Al2O3: 30 vol% CaO·6Al2O3 (CA6) ceramic composites was investigated. Specimens were prepared by in-situ reaction sintering using precursor powders of alumina, and either calcium carbonate or calcium oxide. In some samples, 1 vol% anorthite glass was added as a sintering aid. X-ray diffraction was used to study the phase development in the as-calcined and sintered states. The resultant microstructures were characterized using both scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and imaging secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). It was found that the CA6 grains developed a platelike morphology when CaCO3 was used as the starting calcium-rich powder. In contrast, samples prepared using CaO resulted in equiaxed CA6 grains. This result was observed to be independent of the anorthite glass addition. The findings are rationalized in terms of distinct CA6 reaction mechanisms, resulting from differences in the reactivity of the powders during the early stages of calcining.
