Summary The Laser Doppler Anemometer has been used to measure the velocity field of the flow inside partially filled tanks with rectangular section excited laterally by a sinusoidal force of given amplitude and frequency. With this method it is possible to determine the natural frequency of the liquid-tank system also for the frequency range where it would be very difficult to use accelerometers or other types of transducers. The analysis has been carried out with tanks of constant size in the direction of the acting force but varying the length of the other side and considering essentially the first two modes of oscillation. The results show, for large values of the exciting force, some non linear effects due to the viscous behaviour of the fluid. In fact at first one can observe the presence of frequency multiple of the frequency of the acting force and then the superposition of a continuous velocity spectrum due to turbulence phenomena. In particular for the second natural frequency it has been observed the coupling between the longitudinal and the transversal mode even before the motion becomes turbulent.
