Notes: Summary Various biotic and abiotic measurements were made over a 48-h period in a small lava-lakelet on the sub-Antarctic Marion Island. Typical oligotrophic conditions prevailed, with low biomass values and rates of productivity for the phytoplankton and bacteria. The bacteria and phytoplankton were subject to heavy zooplankton grazing pressures, which in turn were responsible for rapid carbon turnover rates in the lavalakelet. Diel cycles were observed in bacterial production and algal photosynthesis, with higher rates during the day time. No definite pattern could be seen for the zooplankton, either in terms of filtering rates or migratory activities. Phytoplankton productivity and zooplankton grazing and respiration were responsible for the greatest flow of carbon. Zooplankton occupied the top of the intermediate food chain and dominated the “live” organic carbon content of the water. A cycling index of 44% indicated a fairly closed system where most components were important in determining the overall structure of the system.

Notes: Abstract The fumonisin B mycotoxins (FB1 and FB2) have been purified and characterized from corn cultures of Fusarium moniliforme strain MRC 826. Fumonisin B1 (FB1, the major fumonisin produced in culture, has been shown to be responsible for the major toxicological effects of the fungus in rats, horses and pigs. Recent investigations on the purification of compounds with chromatographic characteristics similar to FB1 have led to the identification of two new fumonisins, FB3 and FB4. Fumonisins A1 and A2, the N-acetyl derivatives of FB1 and FB2 respectively, were also purified and shown to be secondary metabolites of the fungus. Short-term carcinogenesis studies in a rat liver bioassay indicated that over a period of 15 to 20 days, at dietary levels of 0.05–0.1%, FB2 and FB3 closely mimic the toxicological and cancer initiating activity of FB1 and thus could contribute to the toxicological effects of the fungus in animals. In contrast, no biological activity could be detected for FA1 under identical experimental conditions. These studies and others have indicated that the fumonisin B mycotoxins, although lacking mutagenicity in the Salmonella test or genotoxicity in the DNA repair assays in primary hepatocytes, appear to induce resistant hepatocytes similar to many known hepatocarcinogens.

Notes: Abstract  RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) analysis was used to identify molecular markers linked to the Dn2 gene conferring resistance to the Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko). A set of near-isogenic lines (NILs) was screened with 300 RAPD primers for polymorphisms linked to the Dn2 gene. A total of 2700 RAPD loci were screened for linkage to the resistance locus. Four polymorphic RAPD fragments, two in coupling phase and two in repulsion phase, were identified as putative RAPD markers for the Dn2 gene. Segregation analysis of these markers in an F2 population segregating for the resistance gene revealed that all four markers were closely linked to the Dn2 locus. Linkage distances ranged from 3.3 cM to 4.4 cM. Southern analysis of the RAPD products using the cloned RAPD markers as probes confirmed the homology of the RAPD amplification products. The coupling-phase marker OPB10880c and the repulsion-phase marker OPN1400r were converted to sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers. SCAR analysis of the F2 population and other resistant and susceptible South African wheat cultivars corroborated the observed linkage of the RAPD markers to the Dn2 resistance locus. These markers will be useful for marker-assisted selection of the Dn2 gene for resistance breeding and gene pyramiding.

Notes: Abstract A variation of the Polak method of feasible directions for solving nonlinear programming problems is shown to be related to the Topkis and Veinott method of feasible directions. This new method is proven to converge to a Fritz John point under rather weak assumptions. Finally, numerical results show that the method converges with fewer iterations than that of Polak with a proper choice of parameters.

Description: The geodynamic framework of the South China Craton in the early Paleozoic and early Mesozoic has been modeled as developing through either oceanic convergence or intracontinental settings. On the basis of an integrated structural, geochemical, zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic, and mica 40 Ar/ 39 Ar geochronologic study we establish that an intracontinental setting is currently the best fit for the available data. Our results suggest that widespread tectono-magmatic activity involving granite emplacement and mylonitic deformation occurred during two distinct stages: ~435–415 Ma and ~230–210 Ma. The coeval nature of emplacement of the plutons and their ductile deformation is corroborated by the subparallel orientation of the mylonitic foliation along the pluton margins, gneissose foliation in the middle part of pluton, the magmatic foliation within the plutons, and the schistosity in the surrounding metamorphosed country rocks. The 435–415 Ma granitoids exhibit peraluminous, high-K characteristics, and zircons show negative εHf( t ) values (average −6.2, n = 66), and Paleoproterozoic two-stage model ages of ca. 2.21-1.64 Ga (average 1.84 Ga). The data suggest that the early Paleozoic plutons were derived from the partial melting of the Paleoproterozoic basement of the Cathaysia Block. The 230–210 Ma granites are potassic, and have zircons with εHf (t) values of −2.8 – -8.7 (average −5.4, n = 62), corresponding to T DM2 ages ranging from 2.0 to 1.44 Ga (average 1.64 Ga), suggesting that the early Mesozoic partial melts in Cathaysia were also derived from basement. The geochemical distinction between the two phases of granites traces continental crustal evolution with time, with the early Mesozoic crust enriched in potassium, silicon and aluminum, but deficient in calcium, relative to the Paleozoic crust. Kinematical investigations provide evidence for an early-stage ductile deformation with a doubly vergent thrusting pattern dated at 433 ± 1 to 428 ± 1 Ma ( 40 Ar/ 39 Ar furnace step-heating pseudo-plateau ages obtained on muscovite and biotite from mylonite and deformed granite) and a late-stage strike-slip movement with sinistral sense of ductile shearing at 232 ± 1 to 234 ± 1 Ma ( 40 Ar/ 39 Ar furnace step-heating pseudo-plateau ages) along an E-W direction. The geological, geochemical and isotopic signatures likely reflect far-field effects in response to continental assembly events at these times.
