Notes: Summary. A system was developed for testing the ability of herbicides applied to the shoots of the deep-rooted weed Chondrilla juncea to inhibit the regeneration of buds on serial sections along the root. Auxin herbicides known to inhibit regeneration when applied directly to root sections and with a potential for translocation or slow metabolic conversion to an active auxin were selected for testing. The most effective herbicides tested were picloram, N-(diethylaminomethyl)-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetamide and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy-acet-O-methylhydroxamic acid. Each compound reduced bud formation along 40 cm of root. The inhibition of regeneration by the sodium salt of 2,4-D was decreased at temperatures above 25°C. The growth retardants chlormequat chloride, chlorphonium chloride and B-995 were tested as inhibitors of regenerated-bud growth and emergence when applied to shoots; only B-955 was inhibitory. Amitrole and tris-(laziridinyl) phosphine oxide inhibited bud formation and growth. Suppression de la régénération par les racines de Chondrilla juncea L., mauvaise herbe à encrainement profond.

Notes: [Auszug] The experiments reported here are concerned with the normal flower formation of Petkus winter rye by application of gibberellic acid. This cereal is, under the growing conditions of our experiments, a cold-requiring plant. It has been found that, to be successful, treatment must occur at a ...

Notes: Abstract Callus tissues from different explants (hypocotyl, cotyledon, root, leaf and fruit) of Solanum eleagnifolium Cav. were cultured on a modified Murashige-Skoog medium, with 1 mg.1−1 2,4-D as the sole growth regulator. The presence of the alkaloid solasodine was determined by spectrophotometric and TLC methods. Its concentration ranged from 1.00 to 2.15 mg.g−1 DW. The calli from different explants showed a direct association between the solasodine production and their growth, although they have a different production rate. It was also observed that about the seventh week of culture the metabolite concentration decreased in all cases.

Notes: Summary In Argentina, different areas are suitable for seed potato production: however, each has particular problems, mainly related to different pest and diseases. Tierra del Fuego Island is well isolated from traditional potato growing areas. Therefore, it was tested for its potential for seed production. The cultivars Achatt. Mailén INTA. Pampeana INTA and Spunta were grown in Río Grande, San Pablo and Ushuaia from 1991–1994. Nematode presence and aphid population dynamics were recorded. Average tuber yield ranged from 20.1–37.6 t ha−1. After three years PVY and PLRV remained low (0–1% for different cultivars and locations). Moreover, seed tubers obtained were physiologically young. Long days, early frosts and strong winds may limit tuber yield in some years. The island can be considered as an ecological “safe haven” and is very suitable to obtain healthy and physiologically adequate seed potatoes.

Notes: Abstract Plants of the wild species Tagetes mendocina were regenerated, via organogenesis, from explants and callus cultures, and the occurrence of biocidal metabolites, thiophenes, by such undifferentiated tissues and regenerated plants was investigated. Differences between explant sources were apparent in terms of their competence for dedifferentiation and subsequent organogenesis. Leaf-derived cultures were more responsive than the root-derived ones. Biochemical studies revealed that the plants produced were capable of synthezising thiophene like-compounds following in vitro regeneration.
