    Description: Na–HCO3–CO2-rich thermomineral waters issue in the N of Portugal, within the Galicia-Trás-os-Montes region, linked to a major NNE-trending fault, the so-called Penacova-Régua-Verin megalineament. Along this tectonic structure different occurrences of CO2-rich thermomineral waters are found: Chaves hot waters (67 °C) and also several cold (16.1 °C) CO2-rich waters. The δ2H and δ18O values of the thermomineral waters are similar to those of the local meteoric waters. The chemical composition of both hot and cold mineral waters suggests that water–rock reactions are mainly controlled by the amount of dissolved CO2 (g) rather than by the water temperature. Stable carbon isotope data indicate an external CO2 inorganic origin for the gas. δ13CCO2 values ranging between −7.2‰ and −5.1‰ are consistent with a two-component mixture between crustal and mantle-derived CO2. Such an assumption is supported by the 3He/4He ratios measured in the gas phase, are between 0.89 and 2.68 times the atmospheric ratio (Ra). These ratios which are higher than that those expected for a pure crustal origin (≈0.02 Ra), indicating that 10 to 30% of the He has originated from the upper mantle. Release of deep-seated fluids having a mantle-derived component in a region without recent volcanic activity indicates that extensive neo-tectonic structures originating during the Alpine Orogeny are still active (i.e., the Chaves Depression).

    Description: The time is ripe for a comprehensive mission to explore and document Earth's species. This calls for a campaign to educate and inspire the next generation of professional and citizen species explorers, investments in cyber-infrastructure and collections to meet the unique needs of the producers and consumers of taxonomic information, and the formation and coordination of a multi-institutional, international, transdisciplinary community of researchers, scholars and engineers with the shared objective of creating a comprehensive inventory of species and detailed map of the biosphere. We conclude that an ambitious goal to describe 10 million species in less than 50 years is attainable based on the strength of 250 years of progress, worldwide collections, existing experts, technological innovation and collaborative teamwork. Existing digitization projects are overcoming obstacles of the past, facilitating collaboration and mobilizing literature, data, images and specimens through cyber technologies. Charting the biosphere is enormously complex, yet necessary expertise can be found through partnerships with engineers, information scientists, sociologists, ecologists, climate scientists, conservation biologists, industrial project managers and taxon specialists, from agrostologists to zoophytologists. Benefits to society of the proposed mission would be profound, immediate and enduring, from detection of early responses of flora and fauna to climate change to opening access to evolutionary designs for solutions to countless practical problems. The impacts on the biodiversity, environmental and evolutionary sciences would be transformative, from ecosystem models calibrated in detail to comprehensive understanding of the origin and evolution of life over its 3.8 billion year history. The resultant cyber-enabled taxonomy, or cybertaxonomy, would open access to biodiversity data to developing nations, assure access to reliable data about species, and change how scientists and citizens alike access, use and think about biological diversity information.

    Description: A continuous-flow GC/IRMS technique has been developed to analyse δ15N values for molecular nitrogen in gas samples. This method provides reliable results with accuracy better than 0.15‰and reproducibility (1σ) within ±0.1‰ for volumes of N2 between 1.35 (about 56 nmol) and 48.9μL (about 2μmol). The method was tested on magmatic and hydrothermal gases as well as on natural gas samples collected from various sites. Since the analysis of nitrogen isotope composition may be prone to atmospheric contamination mainly in samples with low N2 concentration, we set the instrument to determine also N2 and 36Ar contents in a single run. In fact, based on the simultaneously determined N2/36Ar ratios and assuming that 36Ar content in crustal and mantle-derived fluids is negligible with respect to 36Ar concentration in the atmosphere, for each sample, the degree of atmospheric contamination can be accurately evaluated. Therefore, the measured δ15N values can be properly corrected for air contamination.

    Description: 〈p〉Awareness that traditional two-dimensional (2D) in vitro and nonrepresentative animal models may not completely emulate the 3D hierarchical complexity of tissues and organs is on the rise. Therefore, posterior translation into successful clinical application is compromised. To address this dearth, on-chip biomimetic microenvironments powered by microfluidic technologies are being developed to better capture the complexity of in vivo pathophysiology. Here, we describe a "tumor-on-a-chip" model for assessment of precision nanomedicine delivery on which we validate the efficacy of drug-loaded nanoparticles in a gradient fashion. The model validation was performed by viability studies integrated with live imaging to confirm the dose-response effect of cells exposed to the CMCht/PAMAM nanoparticle gradient. This platform also enables the analysis at the gene expression level, where a down-regulation of all the studied genes (〈i〉MMP-1〈/i〉, 〈i〉Caspase-3〈/i〉, and 〈i〉Ki-67〈/i〉) was observed. This tumor-on-chip model represents an important development in the use of precision nanomedicine toward personalized treatment.〈/p〉

    Description: Las cuevas de Algar do Carvão (una sima volcánica de génesis compleja) y Branca Opala (un tubo volcánico) se diferencian de otras cuevas de la isla de Terceira por tener espeleotemas formados sólo por ópalo. Esta composición, y el hecho de ser cuevas volcánicas, hacen pensar que el origen de la sílice pueda estar ligado a la actividad hidrotermal. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar la composición isotópica en δ¹⁸O SMOW , y en δD SMOW de los espeleotemas de sílice, para determinar su impronta geoquímica y las condiciones de formación. Las muestras estudiadas de la sima de Algar do Carvão son estalactitas y revestimientos de paredes, que se han formado en ambiente subaéreo, mientras que, las estudiadas en el tubo volcánico de Branca Opala, han sido definidas como estromatolitos silíceos subacuáticos. Los datos de δD de los espeleotemas de ambas cuevas son relativamente parecidos (−102,0 ± 10,5‰ en Branca Opala y −103,7 ± 11,1‰ en Algar do Carvão) y se puede asumir que los fluidos involucrados en su formación puedan ser similares. Por otra parte, los datos del δ¹⁸O SMOW revelan que los espeleotemas de Algar do Carvão presentan valores relativamente más altos (δ¹⁸O SMOW 39,4 ± 0,3‰) que los estromatolitos opalinos de Branca Opala (δ¹⁸OSMOW 35,2 ± 0,8‰). La diagénesis que sufre el ópalo A puede explicar, en parte, las diferencias observadas, pero, otros factores genéticos también están influyendo, como pueda ser el hecho de que las estalactitas de Algar do Carvão se formaran en condiciones subaéreas, con la influencia de la evaporación, mientras que los espeleotemas de Branca Opala fueran subacuáticos, o bien, que las aguas de precipitación de los espeleotemas de Branca Opala fueran hasta 10,7 °C más calientes que las de Algar do Carvão.
