Notes: Abstract  Between March 1994 and April 1997, the physical and chemical parameters and chemical composition of the urban solid waste leachate of the Marbella landfill (southern Spain) were determined. The data obtained show an ammonium and sodium chloride and bicarbonate type, a pH〉7 and high mineralization, effectively described by the following parameters: Na+, K+, NH4 +, Cl– and alkalinity. The chemical composition depends on the rainfall: in dry years, the mineralization and component concentrations have values as much as double those found in normal rainfall years. After storm events, a major and rapid dilution (within several hours) is seen in the leachate.

Notes: Abstract  The analysis of the fractures in the marble forming sierras Blanca and Mijas (southern Spain), with faults of markedly different sizes and joints measured at 21 stations, demonstrate the presence of two principal directions of fractures (NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW). Other major directions of fractures, although less distinct, are N100E, N120E and N60E. The form of the karstic cavities known in these sierras was influenced by fractures, fundamentally NNW-SSE and, to a lesser extent, NNE-SSW, as well as by the mineralogical composition of the marble. All the cavities known are located in blue limestone marble and appear to have formed by the end of the Miocene, principally during the Pliocene and the Pleistocene. From a hydrogeological standpoint, Sierra Blanca and Sierra Mijas constitute a unit limited by faults oriented ENE-WSW, NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW. Specifically, fractures of the latter two directions influence the compartmentalization and the hydrogeological functioning of the unit. According to the degree of fracturing and/or karstification, three basic types (apart from intermediate situations) of aquiferous behavior have been distinguished: karstic aquifer, fissured aquifer, and porous aquifer.

Notes: Abstract Laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) has been applied to spatially locate several atomic species in speleothems taken from the Nerja’s Cave (Málaga, Spain). Spatial distribution profiles of Mg at 285.21 nm and Sr at 407.77 nm were obtained while the laser was rastered through different paths along the sample. These elements were selected due to their importance as palaeoclimatic indicators. The 532 nm output of a Nd:YAG laser was used to irradiate the samples and generate the plasma that was spectrally analyzed and detected by using an intensified CCD detector. The signals were normalized to the Ca line to minimize pulse-to-pulse fluctuations in the laser source. Several studies were carried out to check for the point-to-point heterogeneity of the natural speleothem.

Notes: Abstract A crystallization kinetics analysis of several polypropylene-polyethylene (PP-PE), PP-rich copolymers was made by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallization was studied via calorimetric measurements at different cooling rates. Several additives were added to the base material. Some test samples were subjected to artificial ageing processes. A modified isoconversional method was used to describe the crystallization process under non-isothermal conditions. The value of the Avrami parameter was determined for primary and secondary crystallization.

Notes: Summary The relation between freeness and the cationic demand of fibrous suspensions containing an industrial kraft hardwood bleached pulp (refined at different levels) is studied in this paper. The technique used was the colloidal titration. Results suggest that the fixation on cellulosic fibres is attained through two mechanisms: ionic exchange and adsorption by means of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces.

Notes: Abstract The concentration influence of some commercial polyethylenimines, used as retention agents, on the retention efficiency during the sheet formation is studied in this paper. The conditions of an industrial wire end have been simulated by means of a dynamic jar of exclusive design. Measurements of the zeta potential have been taken to quantify the surface charge of particles and the colloid titration ratio (quotient between the cationic demand and the anionic demand of pulp slurries) has been evaluated. Both techniques have proved convenient to monitor the retention level; therefore, they are efficient methods to control the retention level in the sheet formation. The univocal relation existing between zeta potential and the logarithm of the colloid titration ratio has been demonstrated. Finally, the variation of the level of turbulence has proved the importance of the hydrodynamics factors in the retention.

Notes: Summary With the current interest in chemicals production from biomas and in view of the emerging pulping processes, the hydrolysis of lignocellulosics is being considered as a promising industrial approach. Since hemicellulose is more readily hydrolyzed than cellulose, most processes include a prehydrolysis step to remove pentosans prior to the main hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose. However, the mechanism of solid-phase acid-catalyzed hydrolysis has not been elucidated and it is impossible to predict the extent of reaction a priori. Having the goal to design reactors, engineers need empirical rate equations. A series of kinetic data available in the literature have been compiled and different kinetic empirical models were analyzed in order to simulate the dilute-acid prehydrolysis of xylan-containing materials. The objective of this paper is to provide profiles of xylan removal and xylose production as a function of a few process variables such as: preheating time, heating rate, acid concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time. Moreover, the influence of biomass species as well as the type of reactor were studied to understand the different solubilization profiles obtained. Other variables such as biomass concentration and particle size were also analyzed. The cellulose dissolved during the prehydrolytic stage was calculated to determine the prehydrolysis selectivity.

Notes: Summary Continuous thermo-mechano-chemical pretreatment of wood (particle size: 0.25–0.50 mm) was conducted by steam injection for rapid heating-up of slurry (170–215°C), flow through homogenization valves (mechanical effects), and autohydrolysis in a plug flow reactor (90–95 s) (thermochemical reactions). The process was carried out in aqueous phase without addition of any chemicals. Residues resulting from the pretreatment were characterized by thermal and elemental analyses. The extent and selectivity (hemicellulose removal and delignification) of the wood solubilization were analyzed as a function of pretreatment temperature and the thermal severity factor, the goal being the optimization of hemicellulose dissolution. Experimental results were compared with those previously obtained in a batch cascade reactor system.
