    Description: With the growing interest in history of science, it is worthwhile finding out more about the role of the University of Coimbra in developing science in Portugal and Brazil. This book offers a brief overview of the history of Luso-Brazilian science, focusing on the role of the University in developing science in the two countries from the beginning of the 16th century (Brazil was discovered in 1500) until the middle of 1949 (when the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Egas Moniz, who is still today the only Nobel prize winner in the area of sciences in the whole Portuguese-speaking world). The work attempts to maintain a balance between historical periods, scientific disciplines and authors from each side of the Atlantic, providing a multi-faceted portrait of science in the Luso-Brazilian world. As such it forms an essential springboard for further studies.

    Description: Trata-se do catálogo de uma exposição bibliográfica, documental e experimental que, com o mesmo título, esteve patente na Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra no ano de 2005 no quadro da celebração do Ano Mundial da Física. A exposição versou a receção da obra de Albert Einstein em Portugal entre 1905, data da publicação dos primeiros artigos da relatividade restrita até 1956, ano da sua morte. Vários textos de físicos e historiadores de ciência portugueses e brasileiros (Ana Simões, Augusto Fitas, Carlos Fiolhais, Décio Martins Ruivo, Joaquim Fernandes, Orfeu Bertolami e Paulo Crawford) tratam facetas da vida e obra de Einstein, com particular ênfase nas relações do sábio com Portugal (investigação, ensino e divulgação das teorias da relatividade restrita e geral e de outros tópicos de física desenvolvidos por Einstein).     Description: This book brings together a series of short texts by researchers on the History of Science project at the University of Coimbra, with the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology. It offers an overview of the Faculties of Mathematics and Philosophy from 1772 to 1933, with particular attention to the scientific literature published by the Coimbra University Press in the 18th and 19th centuries. It also contains an index of the 18th century scientific collections in Physics, Chemistry and Natural History, kept in the University Science Museum; a history of the Anthropology collections in the same museum; a text about the Faculty of Medicine in the 19th century, which deals with its relationship with the Faculties of Mathematics and Philosophy; a description of the Office of Geometry at the Faculty of Sciences, created in 1911; and finally a text about the history of the Science Class at the Coimbra Institute, the academy that functioned as an extension of the University.

    Notes: We evaluate binding energies, ionization energies, and second-order energy differences as functions of valence electron number for small spherical clusters of stabilized jellium, using the Kohn-Sham equations with the local-spin-density (LSD) approximation. Cohesive energies are also reported. A comparison is made with semiclassical formulas (liquid drop model and Padé approximant, with surface and curvature coefficients derived from first principles). These formulas nicely average the shell-structure oscillations of the energy, which are found to be almost the same as for ordinary jellium. Spherical clusters with 1, 7, and 9 electrons have binding energies very close to those of the semiclassical predictions. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The stabilized jellium model is a simple modification of the jellium model, which more realistically describes simple metals of high density, such as Al, Ga, Pb, etc. We analyzed the fragmentation processes of charged spherical Al clusters in the framework of the stabilized jellium model. Kohn-Sham calculations of the parents and daughters, using the local density approximation, have been made. We evaluated the dissociation energies of AlN+, AlN2+, and AlN-, with N=1-30 atoms, in all possible decay channels. We discuss the most favorable decay channels, which are ruled by the shell structure (magic numbers of valence electrons in the parents and the daughters) oscillations around an average trend given by a liquid drop model. We compare our calculations with others and with the available experimental data. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: In a positively charged metallic cluster, surface tension tends to enhance the ionic density with respect to its bulk value, while surface-charge repulsion tends to reduce it. Using the stabilized jellium model, we examine the self-expansion and compression of positively charged clusters of simply metals. Quantal results from the Kohn-Sham equations using the local density approximation are compared with continuous results from the liquid drop model. The positive background is constrained to a spherical shape. Numerical results for the equilibrium radius and the elastic stiffness are presented for singly and doubly positively charged aluminum, sodium, and cesium clusters of 1-20 atoms. Self-expansion occurs for small charged clusters of sodium and cesium, but not of aluminum. The effect of the expansion or compression on the ionization energies is analyzed. For Al6, we also consider net charges greater than 2+. The results of the stabilized jellium model for self-compression are compared with those of other models, including the SAPS (spherical averaged pseudopotential model). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
