    Notes: Abstract Diclofenac sodium is a widely used drug with interesting absorption and disposition features when administered to laboratory animals. The present study was undertaken to assess the pharmacokinetics of the drug after iv and gastrointestinal dosing to rats. Renal excretion of unchanged drug was negligible, but biliary excretion of the drug (unchanged and conjugated) was detected in bile duct-cannulated rats; it accounted for 27.2 and 31.2% of the total dose following iv and intraduodenal administration, respectively. Most of the drug excreted in the bile was conjugated diclofenac; unchanged drug accounted for only 4.7 and 5.4% of total diclofenac excreted in the bile after iv and intraduodenal dosing, respectively. In normal animals, intestinal absorption of the drug excreted in the bile resulted in higher drug concentrations in plasma than those obtained in bile duct-cannulated rats, but only after 60 min of dosing. When administered directly into the duodenum, diclofenac absorption was extremely fast and the maximum plasma diclofenac concentration was reached within 2 min. After oral dosing, an early peak was also observed, but it was lower than that obtained after intraduodenal dosing: 71% diclofenac hioavailability was found in bile duct-cannulated rats intraduodenally dosed, whereas in normal animals dosed by mouth a bioavailability of 79% was obtained. In normal animals intraduodenally dosed, an apparent bioavailability of 106% was observed. All of these features, particularly the influence of enterohepatic circulation on drug bioavailability, are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Water stress induced an increase in endogenous concentrations of ABA in Lavandula stoechas L. plants to 13100 pmol ABA g−1 FW, which may contribute to the maintenance of water relations between the second and the third day of water stress treatment. After the third day, a sharp decrease in ABA levels was observed to 2630 pmol ABA g−1 FW, together with a decrease in water content and water potential and a loss of plant response to water stress. Water deficit did not induce an increase in endogenous ABA concentration, which remained at 514 pmol ABA g−1 FW in Rosmarinus officinalis L., which is more sclerophyllous than L. stoechas. Nevertheless, the relative water content of Rosmarinus officinalis L. after seven days of water stress decreased more than 40% and ψ reached values of −3.2 MPa. R. officinalis showed lower levels of ABA, but significantly higher levels of IAA and ZR than L. stoechas (4 times and 6 times respectively in well watered-plants). The increase in ABA levels is not a common mechanism in these two Mediterranean shrubs which survive under water stress conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrastructural alterations in mesophyll cells as well as variations in bulk leaf endogenous ABA and IAA concentrations were studied in water-stressed field-grown plants of Fatsia japonica. Under water deficit cellular membranes were modified and an increase in vesicles was observed. The main damage to the chloroplasts included thylakoid swelling and disruption of the chloroplast envelope. Concomitant variations in abscisic acid and indole-3-acetic acid were observed. Despite the expected increased in endogenous ABA concentration in relation to water stress, after the highest concentration of ABA, observed at predawn in severely stressed plants (29-1), there was a sharp decline from 2768 pmol g fw−1 to 145 pmol g fw−1; thus in severely stressed plants ABA levels were not related to changes in bulk leaf ABA contents. Water stress did not influence the concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid, although the increase in the endogenous abscisic acid concentration could be related with the ultrastructural changes.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrastructural alterations in epidermal and mesophyll cells as well as variations in bulk leaf endogenous ABA and IAA concentrations were studied in PEG-treated plants of Fatsia japonica Decne & Plank. Under stress induced by PEG vesicles containing fibrous material and electron-dense bodies associated with plasma membranes were observed. Cytochemical examination indicated that electron-dense bodies corresponded to lipids and the fibrous material of the vesicles were polysaccharides. Chloroplasts, mitochondria, nuclei and Golgi apparatus also showed modifications. A strong relationship was found between increasing PEG-induced water stress, increasing endogenous ABA and ultrastructural changes. In relation with leaf ontogeny and ABA concentration a higher ABA level was observed in younger than in older leaves. The differences in the endogenous concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid are unclear, except after 7 days of PEG-treatment. The increase in the endogenous abscisic acid concentration could be related with the ultrastructural changes.

    Notes: Abstract A general treatment of enterohepatic recirculation of drugs has been developed based on the fraction of drug in systemic circulation that is excreted in the bile and the fraction of drug reabsorbed from the gut that reaches systemic circulation in each enterohepatic cycle. The deduced equations make it possible to establish mathematical relationships between the areas under the blood level curves (AUC) of a drug when administered to normal and bile duct-cannulated animals and to predict the effect of enterohepatic recycling on bio-availability and clearance. The results were compared with those obtained by other authors using different approaches to enterohepatic recirculation, and some discrepancies were found in the equations describing the effect of enterohepatic recycling on AUC and bioavailability of drugs. The cause of such discrepancies and the problems associated with the prediction of hepatic extraction ratio from in vitro studies are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of intermediate-term periodicities in solar activity, at approximately 323 and 540 days, has been claimed by different authors. In this paper, we have performed a search for them in the historical records of two main indices of solar activity, namely, the daily sunspot areas (cycles 12–21) and the daily Zürich sunspot number (cycles 6–21). Two different methods to compute power spectra have been used, one of them being especially appropriate to deal with gapped time series. The results obtained for the periodicity near 323 days indicate that it has only been present in cycle 21, while in previous cycles no significant evidence for it has been found. On the other hand, a significant periodicity at 350 days is found in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number during cycles 12–21 considered all together, also having been detected in some individual cycles. However, this last periodicity must be looked into with care due to the lack of confirmation for it coming from other features of solar activity. The periodicity around 540 days is found in cycles 12, 14, and 17 in sunspot areas, while during cycles 18 and 19 it is present, with a very high significance, in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number. It also appears at 528 days in sunspot areas during cycles 12–21. On the other hand, it is important to note the coincidence between the asymmetry, favouring the northern hemisphere, of sunspot areas and solar flares during cycle 19, and the fact that the periodicity at 540 days was only present, with high significance, in that hemisphere during that solar cycle.

    Description: Context. Partially ionized plasmas constitute an essential ingredient of the solar atmosphere since layers such as the chromosphere and the photosphere and structures such as prominences and spicules are made of this plasma. On the other hand, ground- and space-based observations have indicated the presence of oscillations in partially ionized layers and structures of the solar atmosphere, which have been interpreted in terms of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Aims. Our aim is to study the temporal behavior of nonlinear Alfvén waves, and the subsequent excitation of field-aligned motions and perturbations, in a partially ionized plasma when dissipative mechanisms such as ambipolar diffusion, radiative losses, and thermal conduction are taken into account. Methods. First, we applied the regular perturbations method for small-amplitude initial perturbations to obtain the temporal behavior of perturbations. Then we solved the full set of nonlinear MHD equations for larger values of the initial amplitude. Results. We obtain analytical and numerical solutions to first-, second-, and third-order systems of equations and study the effects produced by ambipolar diffusion and thermal mechanisms on the temporal behavior of Alfvén and slow waves. We also study how the majority of the energy is transferred from the Alfvén waves to plasma internal energy. After numerically solving the full nonlinear equations when a large amplitude is assumed, the profile of the perturbations displays the typical sawtooth profile characteristic of associated shocks. Conclusions. When ambipolar diffusion is taken into account, first-order Alfvén waves are damped in time, while second-order perturbations are undamped. However, due to the release of heat produced by ambipolar diffusion, other physical effects that modify the physical conditions in the spatial domain under consideration appear. On the other hand, the second-order perturbations are damped by thermal effects with a damping time that can be longer or shorter than that of Afvén waves. Therefore, after the initial excitation, Alfvén waves can be quickly damped, while slow waves remain in the plasma for a longer time, and vice versa.
